Half a century of living doesn’t need to show in your face – being 50 doesn’t mean submitting to the visible signs of age. It certainly doesn’t mean it’s time to slow down and give up. Lots of ladies see the decade ahead as a huge opportunity to do all those things they haven’t had time to do – and want to look just fabulous doing it!
Cosmetics, skincare and the technology that underpins them have moved on since the 1970s (when today’s 50 year olds started experimenting with cosmetics and skin care) and we know a lot more about looking after your skin, but, for some people, a lack of knowledge earlier on has left its mark. This means that, although you may feel full of life, your face is may be showing the passing of the years.
There is no reason why you should not look your best – and the first step is to ensure that your skin care regime keeps your skin in the best possible condition as the years pass. However, as you get older some of your skin’s natural elasticity will go, the plumpness of youth will decrease as the production of collagen lessens, so your face, neck and décolletage are likely to show fine lines as the skin texture thins and becomes drier. This is also likely to be exacerbated as you experience the hormonal changes of the menopause.
So – is that it? Do you just have to put up with those ‘character lines’, sagging jowls and wrinkly cleavage? No, it isn’t and no, you don’t! Fifty years of life experience give you the wisdom to really enjoy what life has to offer – and also to know how to ensure you continue to look vibrant and attractive – and feel great about how you look.
The most extreme – and most expensive – approach is to have a face lift, and, for some people, that works to create a tauter skin that looks smoother. It’s not the only way and there are a wide range of treatments that offer a gentler (and often a more effective and longer term) solution.
What can be achieved without surgery?
You can:
- Reduce or remove scarring from acne, rosacea and other eruptions that have left their mark.
- Reduce or remove those telltale tiny red lines from broken capillaries.
- Reduce or remove sun damage and the brown marks caused by over-production of melanin from both the sun and what are commonly called ‘age spots’.
- Improve your collagen production to plump up your skin with treatments such as Omnilux, which uses light to stimulate your natural collagen producing cells.
- Dermal fillers, like Radiesse and Sculptra, or Botox to recreate the smooth skin surface and take away those ‘character’ or ‘laughter’ lines.
- You can remove a double chin using VaserLiposelection – done under a local anaesthetic, no surgery and much safer with a fast recovery time.
- You can use skin peels, microdermabrasion or laser treatments to literally resurface your skin leaving it smooth and blemish free.
These are just a few of the treatments – and there are also prescription only cosmetics that act to improve your skin too. We will go into more detail in future articles.
Some of these treatments are available through beauty salons – however, the safest route is to consult with a qualified physician who will examine your skin, understand any underlying or previous conditions and know the right treatments for your skin that will achieve the results you want.
Looking simply stunning is not a matter of being under 50 – or even under 40 – if you look after your skin and treat it with loving care you’ll start to look more like how you feel!
