Review of Shiny Happy Hair by Andrew Barton

Article by Fabafterfifty

As well as reading his book I also attended a talk where Andrew spoke about the right hair cut and colour could literally take years off a woman’s appearance, and how the right style could also help us look taller, thinner, and balance out wide hips- I’d like to say ‘yes please’ to all of the above!  (although  I think my unruly curls would be a challenge even for Andrew’s magic scissors!)

Happy Shiny Hair has a whole chapter on hair and anti-ageing and Andrew first stresses the importance of a  healthy lifestyle including a healthy protein rich diet, drinking up to 2 litres of water a day and cutting down on alcohol.

Andrew’s top twenty do’s and don’t for how to look younger

Andrew shares his top twenty do’s and don’ts  for how to look younger  which would be invaluable to a women over fifty choosing their hairstyle . These include changing or adapting your look every 3 years, avoiding overly trendy haircuts, having softness around the face (both cut and colour), and the benefits of using deep-conditioning masks.

Andrew Barton styling hairAndrew’s personality and humour come through on every page, with an excellent step by step section on how to ‘get the look’, with detailed instructions and lots of photos.

Andrew talks about  how to choose a good stylist, and says its absolutely fine to take photos of styles you like along with you- although it’s important to be realistic . No point in taking an unrealistic  celebrity shot or even one of yourself  taken several decades ago and expecting the stylist to recreate the look.

Good hair news for women over 50

andre Barton book launch Shiny Happy HairThere is good news for those women over 50 (like me) who don’t want to go short- Andrew says its fine to have long hair- although to remember that long hair with a centre parting suits very few women in their 20s, so is a hairstyle to be avoided in your 50s! For those of us who have moved to the ‘grey side’ there’s helpful advice too.

A fun read, packed with information and for younger, shiny, happy hair.

And if the tresses of the celebrity clients attending the Shiny Happy Hair book launch are anything to go by, his tips work!

Shiny Happy Hair is published by New Holland Publishers and costs £12.99

  1. I have been trying since June to buy the Andrew Barton Shiny Hair book. For my daughter, who gave me a wonderful holiday for my 87 Birthday. I filled the address in so many times, each time it was rejected. because they would not accept the addrss contained a house name as well as a number of the close. I just gave up in despair.
