The Monkees return

Article by Fabafterfifty

Seeing  in the press that the Monkees are making a comeback with a tour scheduled in the UK this summer, it immediately brought back memories of my first ‘crush’ .
I was only seven when the Monkees first appeared on our screens – we watched it as a family  in black and white! I loved the songs, knew all the words and collected all things Monkees! My grandmother bought me the Monkees annual every Christmas and I  played ‘ I’m a Believer’ over and over on my record player.
The Monkees came and went to be replaced by the Osmonds and David Cassidy. Wednesday was ‘Jackie’ day, and one mad rush to get to the newsagents on the way to school to get the latest issue and latest ‘poster’ usually spread over 3 weeks and  starting with the feet first and face last! (one way to make sure we were parted from our pocket money!). Negotiations took place over how much of my bedroom wall was allowed to be covered in pictures, and the Partridge Family on TV became the highlight of my week!
So, will I go and see the Monkees this summer? I’m not sure. I made the mistake of going to see David Cassidy in concert a few years ago and although I enjoyed it, part of me wished I had left David Cassidy as part of a teenage girl’s dream. What worked for me aged  12 didn’t quite work in my 40s. Will the same apply should I see the Monkees? I’m not too sure,  think perhaps I should leave them as a happy memory and sing along on the odd occasion that I hear them on the radio.
I’m a Daydream Believer with happy memories- why chance it!

  1. They’re not making a comeback. They never left. They’ve done tours for many many years now. Great show and they still sing amazingly well. David Cassidy–sadly–can’t even compare.
