I am constantly meeting vibrant women, all with a sparkle in their eyes. And all fabulous women over the age of 50. They all seem to have one thing in common- they all enjoy trying something new! A quick read through some of our’ Fabwomen’ profiles ( walking the great wall of China, setting up businesses, writing novels) will show the amazing things which can be achieved- at any age!
Trying new things
It can be so tempting to stay within our comfort zone – I know how easy it is to become a creature of habit- one look in my shopping trolley on my weekly food shop shows how routine my weekly menu has become! A look through holiday snapshots over the last decade and I’m wearing practically identical outfits in each one, meals out are booked invariably in one of a very small number of restaurants ,always booking to play tennis on the same court with the same people.
To truly celebrate the ‘best half of my life’ I realised that I had to keep trying to do new things.
Try 50 ‘new’ things over 3 months
So, last week I set myself a challenge- to do at 50 new things over the 3 months. I have started by doing small things- giving myself the challenge of ‘creating’ a new area in the garden, rifling through my cookbooks and cooking a ‘new’ meal for dinner guests, accepting an invitation to a ‘Boules’ tournament, even though I had never played before. All little things, but all of which will hopefully stop me becoming too complacent, and prepare me to be open to bigger challenges in the future.
Broaden your horizons over 50
So who will join me in my Fabafterfifty- do something new challenge? You don’t need to climb mountains (unless you REALLY want to) or jump out of planes- just broaden your horizons 50 small fabulous steps at a time!
It only takes one step at a time. What new thing will you try or do differently to be’ Fab after Fifty’ today?

I think this is a simple and beautiful idea. I am so conscious of having found a comfortable rut for myself and it’s time to get out. I want to find a singing group and I’ve just committed to a meditation / creative exercise weekly class. Will see what sort of list I can come up with, sounds like just what I need to shake myself up.
Marion
Marion, like you I too had become very ‘comfortable’. I’ve started a ‘group’ so we can all share our progress!http://www.fabafterfifty.co.uk/groups/50-small-steps-to-being-fab-after-50/ – or you can go to the ‘community’ tab and scroll down to groups- might be an easy way to share and inspire

Good on you! It is the doing of new things that keeps our brain working and keeps us young. So we all need to get out of our comfort boxes and try new things – you will have something new to talk about and its got to be fun!
This is a wonderful concept – I’m going to take up the challenge and keep a journal. Might do a retrospective, too (I’m past fifty lol) and track what I already added! Here’s to staying vibrant and open to adventure along the journey!
We’ve had a great response to this on twitter as well- it would be great to hear about the small steps everyone has taken so far!
Great idea, I’m 50 next year & I’m looking forward to it – I live doing new things – I want to learn to sail next!
