When was the last time you changed your hairstyle? In a new survey 5 of the 10 celebs thought to be in a hair ‘rut’ were over 50. New research shows that British women on average have had the same hairstyle for 6 years and 153 days, and nearly half have had the same style since they were a teenager ( I have to confess to fitting in this category!)
Two thirds of British women are stuck in a style rut because they lack the confidence to change their image, it has emerged. A quarter of those asked said they would never change their hairstyle. More than half of the study, which was commissioned by Remington, wished they had the confidence to try a new hairstyle but were held back by fears of how others might react.
A massive 90 per cent of women had experienced a bad trip to the salon, which led them to feel embarrassed, low on confidence and reluctant to leave the house. In fact, most women keep the same hairstyle for work and play, with 75 per cent admitting they sport a similar style for different occasions like business meetings, parties or even dates.
And one in ten don’t think their current look is great but have stuck with it for years because it’s what they and their friends and family are used to. Hair equals happiness according to most respondents – 70 per cent believe the right ‘do’ makes them feel more attractive while a quarter were convinced it could help them to be taken more seriously as a professional. We all know the effect having a ‘bad hair day’ has!
A number of celebs over 50 made in to the list of Top Ten women stuck in a hairstyle rut: Princess Anne topped the list as the celebrity most in need of a new hair style, while women would love to see The Queen with a new style, others in their 50s included Jerry Hall, Lorraine Kelly and Camilla (Duchess of Cornwall) .
Interestingly and disappointingly no celebs over 50 hit the hairstyle to inspire list!
In fact, it was Cheryl Cole who was voted the biggest inspiration when it comes to lovely locks, topping the list with Rihanna second and the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton taking third.
Surely we could add some inspirational hairstyles from 50plus celebs to a list of our own!

Well I change my hairstyle err – probably every 3 months, colour (tonally at least) veers from Strawberry Blonde to bright orange with every tone of ginger and copper in between. I absolutely believe your hair is one of the most important things that keep you looking young. OK admittedly I work for a haircare company (TIGI) but my hair looking good is ingrained in me. I always remember hair icon Anthony Mascolo once saying: I have clients from their early 20s to late 70s -you can always do the same cut on them, you just adjust it a bit, sometimes leaving a bit of length at the neck or a slightly more layered fringe to soften.
Whose hair over 50 looks great: Lulu, Judi Dench, Goldie Hawn (OK it’s always looked like that -but it still works,) Angela Rippon (Anthony cut her very fine hair this week and she looked amazing.)
It’s always good to change – and surprise people.
Linda, thank you for this- I couldn’t believe that half of the ‘worst’hair list were over 5 and none in the ‘best hair list’. Great that you’ve added some inspirational ones to the list
One of the women who most inspires me is Twiggy, we are the same age and she was my icon when I was a teenager. She can wear her hair long and it looks great. I keep mine short, very shiny and trendy and it works for me. I think the list of women who are stuck in a rut is rather unfair. Kate Moss for example – why fix something if it’s not broken, long natural hair suits her so I disagree that she should change it. The same goes for Holly Willoughby. I don’t think the list is fair!
Twiggy’s great! It was interesting to see that Holly Willoughby and Jennifer Aniston made both lists – just goes to show that we’re all inspired by something different!
My hair is about to undergo a change… I am 52 in a couple of weeks and, what I think looks like a soft curvy long bob, actually resembles Fozzy Bear’s ears hanging round my face (albeit conveniently covering my jowls). Off with her head! – well, just the hair anyway. I’ve downloaded photos of KATE CAPSHAW’s hair to take to the hairdresser. That is one great style.
Good luck with the new hair! Look forward to the ‘reveal’
I’m a bit scared of changing my hairstyle..I’ve had a few disasters in my time.
I remember going to have my hair dyed a gentle auburn shade a few years ago. It looked fine until I had a perm on top.
I woke up looking like a cocker spaniel. Sort of makes you wary of change.
Jan I bet you were a very stylish cocker spaniel!
I for one love long hair. I say look at Jane Seymore. I rest my case. She has cut it over the years, but we are about the same age and build. I just enjoy long hair. Its not super long. I keep it pretty and wear it up for work. But I love long hair.
Jane Fonda is an inspiration both for her hairstyle and general style. She needs to be on all the lists!
