Ariane Poole has made up lots of famous faces- including Lulu, Cilla, Penelope Cruz, Rachel Weisz, so we’re thrilled to have Ariane as our resident make-up expert on Fabafterfifty.
So many of us use the same make-up products and techniques we used when we were younger and Ariane was keen to show how we can look our best once re reach 50 and beyond by changing some of our techniques and being open to trying new colours and products. Her only condition was that I agreed to be her model- on video!
Enjoy the series, we cover everything from primers and using the right foundation , to choosing the right shade of red lipstick for you. Just for the record I hate having my photograph taken, so being on video wasn’t something I was looking forward to, but Ariane was keen to show the difference good make-up application can make in our 50s and wanted to use a ‘normal’ woman and not a model. I hope you enjoy and learn some tips!
How to make-up your eyes over 50
We start off with a quick introduction and then make-up tips for eyes.
>br>br>br
We have primers, foundations, concealers, lips and cheeks and eyebrows to follow in future clips. If you want to see how to diminish fine lines and dark circles and look less ‘jowly’, Ariane covers all these issues in her video tutorials, all of which will be added to the website over the next few days.

Dear Ceri
I was so happy to see you having this remarkable make up artist giving advice to share with everyone.I have particularly liked the corner lift up technique with concealer the bright colored pencil rubbed and the inner white pencil that i have but never used as you confessed earlier too!
Lots of love XXX
Valerie
I really lauged Ceri when you said you never went out without mascara. When I was twenty I hitch-hiked around Greece for 3 months ans slept on the beaches. (It wasn’t such a bad thing in those days) . I only had a very small rucksac with me but it contained Mascara (vital), a little black dress (In case I was invited somewhere posh) and a pair of gloves (yes that’s right gloves for goodness sake as a lady never went out without gloves! )
I dont think I used the dress or the gloves(What a relief!) but I NEVER went out without mascara.
Loved the make up tips.
Ellie
I think mascara must be a girl’s best friend!
Thanks so much for this! Great tip about avoiding brown and going with grey shadow. Any other colors that are good for darker features? (dark brown eyes and hair) And what about makeup for evenings, is it safe to wear more or darker shadow then?
I sure agree about the mascara, couldn’t live without it!
Hope you post more before I leave on holiday this week!
Hi,Andrea! Glad you like them. Am posting lots more clips (have just posted blushers & bronzers) over the next week or so. Depending on feedback we are planning to do more , and also some ‘live’ workshops. We are hoping to have a dark haired volunteer next time. We will not be using models as Ariane wants to show how make-up works for ‘real’ women. Enjoy your holiday
Hi Cheri,
You are so brave and beautiful. I learnt a lot, and have cast aside my brown liner and shadow.
Any foundation tips would be appreciated as I use a matte foundation on my t-zone only, but I know there is a whole new world of light reflective etc foundations out there. Being 50, I need cheek calming and thread vein concealing too. I now consider myself lucky to have an oily skin, as the spots are more rare, and the benefits of wrinkly free are great! Please help!
Hi Sharn, I will be sharing the foundation and concealer tips over the next few days. Ariane explains how to choose and use the new products available to us and also the benefits of using a primer beforehand. She worked wonders on me -as you will see! I don ‘t where you live, But we have had such a good response to the videos that if enough people are interested Ariane has said she will run some live make-up workshops for Fabafterfifty readers. I have already posted the ‘cheeks’ and ‘lips’ tips! Hopefully you’ll find them helpful too. Ceri
Very nice!
Enjoying this, have only got through the eye one. Last time I did a full make up I looked like Mortica Adams, so I do appreciate the advice on here. I have some of the colours mentioned and I’m looking forward to trying them.
