  1. Does the BBC find our ears offensive now?

radio one wants to lose older listeners image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Goodness, it seems the BBC now finds our ears offensive – not how they look , but the fact that many of us still dare to use them to listen to Radio One! How dare we! Haven’t we learnt by the time we reach our 50s that Radio One is the preserve of the young?  it seems that not only does the BBC want to see us on screen, but they are unhappy if anyone over 55 tunes in to Radio One, as they want to attract a younger demographic. According to an article in the Independent although great efforts are being made to migrate us over to more ‘age appropriate’ stations., far too many of us are still tuning in.  It seems it is not for us to decide what radio station we might want to listen to, the powers at the Beeb are deciding...
  2. What was the Anti-Ageing Show at Olympia really like? My review

    anti-ageing show image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon There has been considerable coverage in the press this week about an exhibition held at Olympia last week called ‘the anti-ageing health and beauty show’.  I went along , primarily to see if it was an event to consider next year for a new project I am involved in. According to one journalist ‘bits of us are falling apart’ Having read some of the reviews I am starting to wonder if I attended the same event. I had a call from one person asking if I had been to the Botox Festival they had read about in the press held at Olympia and today I read a summary of the show in the Financial Times. According to the FT the 11,300 visitors (me included) don’t ‘like what is happening to us at all’ and ‘bits of us were falling apart’ and we were ‘looking for a...
  3. Does a woman over 50 have to ask a question in the audience of Question Time in order to be on TV?

    2
    Question Time image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon I could have hugged the woman in the audience who asked that question at the end of last night’s Question Time. And how true it is . The absence of women over 50 on our screens is a topic we have raised frequently on this website. Of course, being the last, ‘lighter’ question on the show it was met and responded to with humour, but none the less I think the lady who asked the question deserves a medal for getting it debated on such a high profile programme. Is it because men run TV companies? The general consensus of the panel was that things were changing, and that it had been recognised that people wanted to see more mature presenters on TV. It was also suggested that the reason for the absence of women over 50 was that most of the TV channels are run...
  4. Dresses with Sleeves – Peplums CAN work over 50

    2
    jaeger peplum dress image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon None of us want to look like mutton dressed as lamb, so when it comes to updating our wardrobes we do need to pick and choose our ‘on trend’ pieces carefully. This is why I think a plain peplum dress can instantly update your look, without appearing as though you are trying too hard. This navy dress by Jaeger is simple and elegant and creates a flattering silhouette. It is also great for covering tums. A statement necklace would work well with this dress – and heels are a must. Neutral accessories for a daytime look, with bold. Jaeger peplum dress £125 available from House of Fraser. Fab after Fifty style tip: if wearing to a wedding, choose a wide brimmed hat to balance the look. An alternative dress with sleeves and a peplum is this navy dress with lace by Adrianna papell from John Lewis....

    Comment
    grieving woman image
Article by Fabaferfifty Death is, unfortunately, an inevitable part of life. The death of a loved one can be utterly devastating, emotionally, and leave a person feeling grief-stricken for a long time to come; depending on your level of emotional connection with the person who has passed on, overcoming the death of a loved one can take weeks, months – or even years. Grieving is a process that we must all go through after the death of a loved one, and it’s a process which is unique to every person. There are, however, a number of common steps which may help during this difficult time. The formalities While the death of a loved one can set off a tide of sadness and emotion in a person, the formalities associated with arranging a funeral, as well as ensuring that the departed’s last wishes are carried out, as laid out in the...

    ceme cobalt blue dress
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Both Kim Cattrall and Vanessa Williams looked very ‘Fab after 50’ when sporting one shoulder dresses for the red carpet this week. A bit of a cheat when it comes to me suggesting dresses with sleeves I know  – can I get way with dresses with sleeve on this one occasion? I hope so! I have found some one shoulder evening dresses that I think would work for women over 50, and have also added a sleeveless one shoulder dress for those who are happy to show off their arms. The first is by Ceme London  (featured above right) – a one shoulder dress on jersey with a side split. The ruching is great for disguising tums and the cobalt blue I have shown is particularly striking. This dress also comes in black and dark purple. summer shorts 2 image
Article by Fabafterfifty It’s getting towards the time of year where you start thinking about wearing shorts. Not over your thick winter tights, but just with your bare legs sticking out so that you can enjoy the warmer weather. This season, there are lots of shorts to choose from, so whether you’re heading off on holiday, heading  off to the golf course or just hanging out in the garden, you can look stunning. The first thing to notice about this season’s shorts is that they come in all lengths, styles, colours and patterns. This makes it easy for you to choose something that works for your age, shape and style whilst still hitting some of this season’s trends. Super-short shorts are still very much in, and you need great legs and a lot of attitude to carry this look off. If, like most women over 50, you’re not  sure that’s...
  8. Helena Rubinstein, the Woman who Invented Beauty Book Review

    Helena Rubinstein image
Review by Ceri Wheeldon For any woman looking for inspiration in business, I can highly recommend, not a ‘how to’ book, but a biography of one of the early pioneers of the beauty industry, Helena Rubinstein.  Helena Rubinstein is described by many as ‘The Woman who Invented Beauty’ What a formidable woman, not to say a true visionary.  From humble beginnings and armed with a determination to have a better life and not to be married off to a suitable man selected by her own parents, she made the brave decision to leave her native Poland and head off to Australia. Here she soon recognised that the pots of cream created by her mother, could be the saviour of the skin of Australian women exposed to the harsh sunshine. With sheer determination and using her considerable charm,  Helena  worked with the recipe given to her by her mother’s chemist in...
  9. With unemployment rising for women, how do you make sure you are employable over 50?

    1
    women employable over 50 image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon I read with concern today the fact that whilst the number of jobless men is falling, women’s unemployment is rising, with 103,000 women becoming long-term unemployed in the last two years. According to a new study by the Fawcett Society most of the new jobs created in the private sector are going to men. So what can we do to make sure that as women we can remain employable in our 50s and 60s? Furthermore, how do we ensure that we have the skills to ensure that we can earn a living wage, and not minimum wage? In many ways the digital economy is a great leveller – no physical strength is required and so gender is irrelevant, and when it comes to jobs requiring an element of engagement in social media – it could be argued that in fact women, who are naturally more empathetic,...
