  1. Finished over 40? Absolutely not ! Women over 50 have a lot to offer employers

women over 50 in workplace image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon How worrying. It seems that a new survey suggests that 75% of women believe that just looking 40 finishes their career, and that any career advancement can be forgotten over the age of 51. With most of us now expected to work until we are nearly 70, it is a significant issue if women believe that they are written off in the workplace before they are even half-way through their working lives. I can say from personal experience that I experienced my greatest career success (as a headhunter) well over the age of 40 – my experience and market knowledge was considered and asset- how young I may or may not have looked was irrelevant! Ageism in the media Much is made of ageism in the media – certainly in the Mailonline’s view of this survey, they are quick to use Arlene Phillips being replaced by...
  2. Choosing a style role model over 50 to make clothes shopping easier

    1

Article by Ceri Wheeldon So often when getting together with friends they bemoan the lack of suitable clothes for women over 50 on the high street. One of the things I often suggest is choosing a celebrity style role model from TV and keeping an image of them in mind when shopping for clothes. Choose someone who you think looks good and who who has a similar body shape to yourself – if you choose someone like Lorraine Kelly or Ruth Langsford they will often tweet about what they have been wearing on their programmes that day and do respond to questions about where they bought specific items  - and many of the outfits they wear are from high street brands such as Zara and Hobbs and Ruth in particular seems to wear a lot of dresses (with sleeves!) from Phase Eight Many of the female celebrities on our screens have the luxury of...
  3. Product review Lulu’s Miracle Glo perfecting glotion – Tried and tested

Lulu's miracle glo younger looking skin image
Review by Ceri Wheeldon I have always taken care of my skin, I keep my face out of the sun as much as possible (or wear high-factor sunscreen when out and about) and am fanatical about removing my make-up at night and using good quality products. There are times though when my skin can still look a little dull, even when I have followed all of Ariane Poole’s make up tips! Adds a youthful healthy glow to skin I am always open minded when it comes to trying new skincare products, and so was pleased to see that there is a new product which you use after applying make-up, to give skin a more youthful, healthy glow. Miracle Glo is also a firm favourite with Lulu, so I was more than happy to give it a go. Described as ‘acting like a make-up artist in a bottle’,  you simply dab...
  4. What are the best courses to take for over 50s?

    Learning online image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon It is never too late to learn a new skill, develop a new interest or even revisit old interests we left behind when we were younger due to lack of time and family and work commitments taking over as priority.  Just because we turn 50 does not mean that we aren’t curious.  A new website called Love to Learn (www.lovetolearn.co.uk) has recognised this and conducted in-depth research into what us over 50s are most interested in.  Ceri Wheeldon chats to Gill Jackson, Director of Love to Learn, to find out more: So tell us about the research you’ve just done We’ve conducted two big pieces of research over the last few months and specifically honed in on the 50+ generation.  We found that adults in their 50s are overwhelmingly upbeat about the benefits of their age group.  They have greater freedom and financial security and 87%...
  5. Does it really take us 40 years to learn how to shop for clothes?

    shopping over 50 image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon What are your thoughts on the latest survey which suggests that women don’t get the hang of clothes shopping until they reach the age of 57 ? ! The report follows a study of 2000 women by ‘myhightstreet’ (age range of participants was not revealed) and says it takes us 40 years to work out what suits us, where to shop, and how to barter? The study showed that it is not until we reach our mid 50s that we understand our body shapes and what suits us. ”And with age comes confidence, as older respondents have come to accept their body shapes and are able to shop and dress with self-assurance”. The report highlights that women of this age are great at spotting bargains, and that 25% buy the majority of their clothes online with others favouring  just one or two favourite shops. It seems...
  6. How does the menopause affect women in the workplace?

    menopause and women's brains image
Interview with Dr Lynda Shaw With many women over 50 returning  to work or thinking about how best to extend their working lives,  I asked Dr Lynda Shaw how the menopause affects the way we think and are able to function in the workplace.  Do we make better or worse employees? Does the menopause change women’s abilities in the workplace? With the hormonal changes experienced by women going through the menopause and the decrease in oxytocin, a hormone which contributes to maternal behaviour, women who have gone through  the menopause no longer need cuddles, and are no longer drawn into others lives to ‘fix’ them. With their children having flown the nest their brains are no longer in emotional turmoil, and typically they are more lucid and even . What does this mean in terms of employment? For employers this makes post-menopausal women the perfect candidates to have on board. They...

  8. Avon Anew Pro Line Corrector Treatment with A F33 review – Tried and Tested Anti-ageing product review

    avon af33 product image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Avon’s new Anew Pro Line Corrector with A F33 is describes as the ultimate in fighting deep lines and wrinkles. With so much ‘buzz’ about this product in the anti-ageing skincare market, I had to try it for myself. Does it work? My skin certainly feels firmer as a result of using, what is difficult to assess is whether it has an effect on deep lines. I’m not sure. I couldn’t really see a visible difference in my crows feet, but I can see how Anew Pro Line Corrector could be helpful in the preventing additional lines, or softening fine lines as it did have a positive  effect on overall skin tone and luminosity. An alternative to botox? I’m not sure that it had any significant impact on deeper wrinkles – so I do not believe it will be a substitute for those who have botox...

    Friendship image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon I normally avoid sharing anything too personal here, but I have found myself very upset and at a loss as to what to do. For years every time a particular friend has let me down, I have always given her the benefit of the doubt. There have been countless occasions when I have been let down at the final hour ‘Oh, I wasn’t sure it was a firm arrangement and I know you wouldn’t want me to miss out on the chance to catch up with so and so, go to the theatre, have a last minute treatment at xyz, etc….’. I remember travelling into London for lunch to be told – oh I thought it was only a quick coffee – I’ve made other arrangements for lunch’. My husband has repeatedly said- walk away. But I have always felt I should not throw away a...
