Article by Ceri Wheeldon I know I am late with the challenge- sometimes my ‘real life’ takes over! Thank you to everyone who has got in touch and prompted me to resume! If sneaking a weekend away to the Cote d’Azur is not an option, then wearing azure blue may be a good alternative.  For a (very late) day 39 of the dresses with sleeves challenge I have selected a dress from Pied a Terre from House of Fraser. Long sleeves, draped where needed and an unusual neckline make this dress a winner for me. Pied a Terre Draped Dress in Azure Blue from House of Fraser £189
  2. Is Mary Beard right not to change her appearance for our TV screens?

Mary Beard meet the romans image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Mary Beard is 57, intelligent, and on our TV screens presenting and sharing her passion for all things Roman. But it seems that not everyone is happy. Why? Because Mary does not conform to the stereotypical image of the presenters we are used to seeing on screen. It seems that while some appreciate her in depth knowledge of Roman history and culture which Mary so happily shares, others, such as critic AA Gill are keener to criticise Mary’s lack of make-up and use of a personal stylist. Mary is happy to be appear on screen without artifice, being comfortable in her own skin, and according to an interview given by Mary for the Daily Mail, she is hoping more women like herself will appear alongside her on our screens. Mary makes the point that she hopes that people appreciate her not for what she looks like,...

    signs of depression image
Article by Caroline Carr. This week is Depression Awareness Week, so here are a few important points: Depression can come on suddenly, as the result of a trauma or stressful event, or it can build up for years, and a person may experience it once, or have bouts over a period of time. Some people feel sad and gloomy for months or years. In some cases, it never really goes away.   It is likely to be the result of a combination of some of the following: life circumstances – what has occurred, and what is occurring in the person’s life, the type of personality a person has, and how they deal with things generally, whether or not depression runs in the family, genes and DNA   Different types of depression are more debilitating than others – and more serious. Categories and types include:  What are the different types of...

buying a pub in your 50s image
Article by Lesley Bailey Together Gill and I are ‘The Little Pub Company’. Gill is fifty, married with 2 grown up daughters and one daughter in her teens. She also has one granddaughter. I (Lesley) am fifty nine, twice divorced and have two grown up daughters. Gill and I worked together for a small pub owning company based in the Midlands. Gill was my boss and the Operations Director for the company, whilst I prepared the company accounts. Last year the bank called in all the loans for the company we worked for and in effect we realized that as soon as they were all sold we would no longer have employment. We  both realized that we may be facing a very tough future especially at our age and in the current economic climate. Deciding to buy part of the business One day last August, Gill came to me and...

Do you want the future to be worse? Most people want to live well. Many of us want to live as well as possible. employment for women over 50 image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon It would appear that during the recession, it is the “Madonna generation” who have fared better when it comes to finding employment according to a study by the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development). This is great news, as we have extolling the benefits as to why women over 50 make great employees on the Fabafterfifty website for some time. The news should also be a confidence boost to any women over 50 currently seeking employment –  you are very employable and employers do appreciate the skills you are able to bring to the workplace. Interestingly, the CIPD report also shows an increase in the number of women choosing to be self-employed -  again we have seen just how successful some of our ‘fabpreneurs’  featured in our ‘Fabwomen’ section have been. Some key points from the CIPD study relating to women over 50 in the...

    dealing wth menopause image
Article by Kathy Payne You know what it’s like. It starts with changes to your monthly cycle and then its hot flushes, sweats, disturbed sleep, mood changes, lower libido, dryness and maybe getting a little rounder about the middle. It’s the M word. Menopause. I almost typed “dreaded M word” but you know menopause is a life stage, rites of passage, a new beginning.  Like pregnancy, it’s not an illness: it’s a natural state in women. I’m not being glib. I know menopause symptoms can be unpleasant, debilitating, stressful and worrying for some. I also know that the transition time varies from woman to woman. I regularly meet women with symptoms in my homeopathic practice and hear their particular experiences. Homeopathy is a system of medicine, which treats the individual with highly diluted substances to trigger the body’s natural healing. That’s a different model to conventional medicine, which treats symptoms...

Article by Angela Weyers. It’s that milestone moment that most parents expect or even hope for in their child’s life. When your son or daughter tells you “Mum, we’re getting married!”.  You are probably delighted (or maybe you’re not!) but once your beaming offspring has been hugged and toasted, your thoughts will inevitably turn to the subject of “the mother of the bride outfit”. For some that will mean happily and obsessively throwing themselves into a frenzy of magazine-reading, endless discussions with family/friends and, of course, shopping. For others it will mean a sense of dread and procrastination, culminating in a last-minute, desperate purchase that may or may not look fabulous. Whichever camp you fall into, I hope that the following tips will help to ensure that you look and feel wonderful on your child’s wedding day! Start by getting your colours done! If you have not had a consultation...
  9. How can we best prepare our children for the workplace?

    preparing for workplace image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon With new employment figures signalling more jobs going to foreign workers than young people entering the workplace, Employment Minister Chris Grayling said that the youth of today need to be better prepared for the world of work. With stiff competition for every new job, applicants of all ages must show that that they are willing, ready and motivated to work. I have 25 years experience working as a headhunter. For the last 10-15 years I have been recruiting senior individuals in a very niche market. It was almost light relief when I was asked by a client to conduct some interviews as part of a graduate recruitment drive. What I hadn’t anticipated was how ill prepared most of the applicants all recent graduates, would be for the job interview. Most had not taken the time to review the job spec, most had no idea what the...

Article by Helen Wenley, Helen shares her story…… I live in Auckland, New Zealand.  I am married to a dentist and have two young adult children living at home (I am an ‘older’ Mum) What prompted you to set up a business in your 50s? I like to stay engaged with the community, and doing something that gives me enjoyment means that I can provide others with the same opportunity. What did you do prior to setting up business? I have been an at-home Mum since my son was born in 1989.  I also have done the book-keeping for my husband’s dental business from home. What is your new business? I have explored, and discovered short walks that I have documented.  These self-guides can be downloaded from the website I built myself. Why this particular business? When our children were small we wanted to explore Auckland on foot with them. ...
