Review by Ceri Wheeldon I tend to live my life as though I’m on roller skates at the moment – very little time for any pampering.  I have my makeup routine down to less than 5 minutes  (thanks to Ariane Poole’s fab tips!) so when I literally glanced in the mirror as I scrambled for my eye pencil it just struck me that my eyes looked different, but I couldn’t quite figure out why!  So I looked more closely. More of my eyelid was visible than usual and the whole eye area was less puffy. Feeling very grateful to whichever fairy godmother had decided to sprinkle some magic eye dust on me, I hastily finished getting ready and dashed out to continue my day. It wasn’t until that night when I was removing my makeup that it struck me. The only thing I had done differently was use a new...
  2. Is your lifestyle making your skin look 10 years older?

effects of lifestyle on skin age
Article by Ceri Wheeldon According to in-depth international study , living an unhealthy lifestyle can age a woman’s skin by over TEN YEARS.  It seems that genetics account for 50% of the way we age, but the 33%  is down to damage caused by sun beds, smoking and a lack of fruit and moisturisation in accelerating the ageing process according to research by a team of top skincare experts. The study, which looked at how 585 women in the UK, China and Spain aged over 8 years, showed the factors influencing their skin were the same, even taking into account the backgrounds and skin type of the women involved. Dr Andrew Mayes, a scientist for Simple skincare which pioneered the research, said: “Even we were surprised by just how much lifestyle affects how skin ages; both in terms of the number of years and the percentage.” The study, which was...

  4. Review of Lulu’ s Time Bomb Complexion Cocktail with a shot of B12

    Time Bomb Complexion Cocktail
Review by Ceri Wheeldon I am a huge fan of the Time Bomb range  – I particularly like the Blast to the Past dermabrasion product  and Miracle Glo – I never travel without them, so was keen to see if the Time Bomb Complexion Cocktail would live up to my expectations. Aimed to be used when skin looking less than its best, the Complexion Cocktail claims to give an instant boost to tired, puffy skin. Based on the same premise of shots of vitamin B12 being given to patients who are run down, the Complexion Cocktail is a tonic which is able to instantly revitalise tired skin. But does it work? I put Complexion Cocktail to the test on a day when I (and my skin)  was far from my best having got up at 4 am for an early flight and arrived home absolutely shattered and dehydrated. My reflection...

It seems that working out how best to manage greying hair was high on many lists for women in their 50s. Andrew offers his tips to solve your hair problems. Q. How to deal with patchy grey without endless root retouching? A. Much of the success of covering grey hair is choosing the right colour and it’s true to say that lighter colours are often easier to maintain as the re growth of new hair doesn’t show as quickly. At my Covent Garden Salon we use a new generation of hair colour by Redken that gives an iridescent effect to hair colour resulting in less demarcation line as the new hair grows through. Use a shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair like my Andrew Barton Colour PRO-tect...

  7. How Vitamin C products can benefit mature skin

Review Medik8 vitamin C serum image
Review by Ceri Wheeldon Vitamin C has been used throughout history by women looking to lighten their skin – I can remember my grandmother being adamant that pressing half a lemon on the backs of her hands would diminish her age spots. Not too sure that quite worked, but it seems vitamin C is clinically proven to have skin brightening properties, and when applied topically in the right way can improve skin tone. The problem up until now, it seems, is that one of the best forms of vitamin C (L-asorbic acid), with its great anti-oxidant properties, is very unstable and degrades very quickly and loses its effectives when applied to the skin. A new product, Medik8 CE-Thione has found a way around this problem. They refer to it as being ‘rechargeable vitamin C’. It is recharged by two antioxidant “buddies” Vitamin E & Gluthione which work in synergy with...
  8. Product Review: Ogario London’s Restore and Shine Hair Masque tried and tested

    ogario hair masque review image
Review by Ceri Wheeldon I am always looking for products that can tame my hair- which being incredibly curly, has a mind of its own- and has a tendency towards being dry – especially at the ends. I have noticed taht my hair has become drier and coarser in my 50s. I was thrilled to come across Ogario London’s Restore and Shine Hair Masque which I shall now think of as my ‘rescue remedy’ on bad hair days. My hair was particularly lacklustre following a flu bug and needed more help than my everyday conditioners could offer. The masque itself has a lovely citrus smell and a rich, creamy consistency.  The instructions indicate that you apply after shampooing and concentrate on the ends. You leave on for ten minutes ( just about the right amount of time to apply a face mask or exfoliating treatment if you want to use...

Tips from Ariane Poole Wow what an Award season, Glamour and Gorgeousness everywhere! From the Golden Globes to the BAFTA’S ending with the Oscars, celebrities were strutting the Redcarpet looking stunning. For the most part dresses were Metallic, Black or shades of Nude with the occasional pop of colour. What was interesting this year was an over all recurring theme of bare shoulders, understated make-up with definition on the eyes and hair either up in a relaxed chignon or down with a soft wave/curl. Some of my favourites were: Helen Mirren, Sally Field, Shirley Bassey, Jane Fonda, Kate Capshaw, Meryl Streep and the list goes on….. To get your body & complexion Special Occasion Ready do the following: 1)     For super soft skin exfoliate your body with a mix Coconut Oil and sugar. Rub the mixture on dry skin then pop into the bath or shower. 2)     Moisturise your body...

    female pattern hair loss image
Article by Sara G. Allison Thinning or loss of hair for women is rarely discussed but can cause distress for those affected. I asked trichologist Sara G. Allison to talk about why it occurs, and what can be done when it happens: Female Pattern Hair loss, otherwise known as Androgenic Alopecia-affects many women when there are times of hormonal change, especially around the menopause. However, treatment can usually prevent further hair loss and often cause hair re-growth. Who gets female pattern hair loss? Hair loss in women affected by androgenic alopecia is likely to be first noticed at times of hormonal change, i.e. approaching the menopause or early stages of starting the menopause when there are changes to the testosterone and oestrogen ratio. This change can also cause increased facial and body hair. About 25% of women get advanced FPHL by age 50 Most women over fifty, who present with...
