effects of lifestyle on skin age
Article by Ceri Wheeldon According to in-depth international study , living an unhealthy lifestyle can age a woman’s skin by over TEN YEARS.  It seems that genetics account for 50% of the way we age, but the 33%  is down to damage caused by sun beds, smoking and a lack of fruit and moisturisation in accelerating the ageing process according to research by a team of top skincare experts. The study, which looked at how 585 women in the UK, China and Spain aged over 8 years, showed the factors influencing their skin were the same, even taking into account the backgrounds and skin type of the women involved. Dr Andrew Mayes, a scientist for Simple skincare which pioneered the research, said: “Even we were surprised by just how much lifestyle affects how skin ages; both in terms of the number of years and the percentage.” The study, which was...

  3. How Vitamin C products can benefit mature skin

Review Medik8 vitamin C serum image
Review by Ceri Wheeldon Vitamin C has been used throughout history by women looking to lighten their skin – I can remember my grandmother being adamant that pressing half a lemon on the backs of her hands would diminish her age spots. Not too sure that quite worked, but it seems vitamin C is clinically proven to have skin brightening properties, and when applied topically in the right way can improve skin tone. The problem up until now, it seems, is that one of the best forms of vitamin C (L-asorbic acid), with its great anti-oxidant properties, is very unstable and degrades very quickly and loses its effectives when applied to the skin. A new product, Medik8 CE-Thione has found a way around this problem. They refer to it as being ‘rechargeable vitamin C’. It is recharged by two antioxidant “buddies” Vitamin E & Gluthione which work in synergy with...
  4. Product Review: Bioeffect Body Intensive and Bioeffect Daytime Cream.

    Bioeffect review image
Review by Ceri Wheeldon I always like to share skincare products that really make a difference. I suffer terribly from dry skin on my lower legs. I have no idea why it only affects my legs- I have tried all sorts of lotions and potions, body brushing- lots of things with no difference. I had previously used Bioeffect EGF serum on my face with great results, and discovered that they now had a new Body Intensive lotion ( I read about in an inflight magazine) I thought it was definitely worth  giving a try. It is a highly concentrated clear liquid, and  you only need quite literally a drop per arm and leg. It sinks straight into the skin, instantly making the skin feel softer.  The skin on my legs in particular has improved dramatically, the itching has disappeared, and the skin on my arms feels far softer. It was...
  5. The Menopause and Your Skin

effect of menopause on skin image
Article by by Michelle Baker. I first heard about the menopause as a child when my Mum and Nan talked about in hushed tones.  Then one day, my mum announced ‘I’m going through the change darling!’  After listening to her long list of complaints (and experiencing her moods) I was so glad that I had years ahead of me before I even had to consider it. Although it came at the normal time (late 40’s) it was still a shock when my GP informed me I was peri-menopausal.  And who was the first person I called?  My mum of course!  The interesting thing for me was how my mum just accepted physical changes that took place, especially the aspect of accelerated ageing. When I complained to my mum about that and asked how she dealt with it, she was non-plussed…‘really? Is that why my skin got so dry and spotty?’...

Article by Francesca Keen Whiter teeth can be perceived as more youthful. With so many tooth whitening treatments on offer, how do we know which are are safe to use? Acting Head of Illegal Practice at the General Dental Council, Francesca Keen, talks us through the latest developments on issues involving tooth whitening. Tooth whitening, is something we get asked about a lot. The last 18 months have proved to be quite eventful in the field of tooth whitening with a number of significant milestones. There has been significant press about it, some of it positive and some of it incorrect. The GDC’s stance remains the same; tooth whitening may only lawfully be provided by those who are registered dental professionals.  Who can carry out tooth whitening?  We believe that tooth whitening is the practice of dentistry, which should only be performed by GDC registrants. If you’re thinking about getting...
  7. Avon Anew Pro Line Corrector Treatment with A F33 review – Tried and Tested Anti-ageing product review

    avon af33 product image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Avon’s new Anew Pro Line Corrector with A F33 is describes as the ultimate in fighting deep lines and wrinkles. With so much ‘buzz’ about this product in the anti-ageing skincare market, I had to try it for myself. Does it work? My skin certainly feels firmer as a result of using, what is difficult to assess is whether it has an effect on deep lines. I’m not sure. I couldn’t really see a visible difference in my crows feet, but I can see how Anew Pro Line Corrector could be helpful in the preventing additional lines, or softening fine lines as it did have a positive  effect on overall skin tone and luminosity. An alternative to botox? I’m not sure that it had any significant impact on deeper wrinkles – so I do not believe it will be a substitute for those who have botox...

    Dove_Original_deodorant image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon I always like use products that do more than one thing – I’m far too busy to do ‘body by numbers’! I think as we get older our skin gets drier. When I remember I do ‘body brush’ in order to help improve overall circulation and skin tone, but I have found that simple things like shower gels and deodorants that were former favourites can tend to have a drying effect on the skin. I have also found myself increasingly using products which moisturise as well as cleanse, and if you look at my previous reviews you will see that I have been a long time fan of Dove products – and have used their moisturising body wash for some time. With a long weekend planned in the South of France, and the prospect of wearing sleeveless tops looming, I wanted my skin to look its...
  9. Who is prescribing your botox? New guidelines in place as remote prescribing is banned.

    botox injections image
Article by Doctor Michel Lauzel Remote prescribing of Botox no longer permitted under new GMC guidelines. Anti- wrinkle injections (botulinum toxins) such as botox, vistabel, azzalure, xeomin, dysport, have become so commonplace, that it is easy to forget that all these products are in fact prescription drugs. Every time you have a botox treatment there should be a corresponding prescription issued by a registered medical doctor, dentist or prescribing nurse. It has become common practice for freelance nurses (non prescribing) to administer these injections to individuals by obtaining botox and other botulinum toxins via remote prescription i.e. having doctors prescribe the botox via phone or fax without actually seeing the patient. With remote prescribing, the doctor cannot effectively evaluate the movement of facial muscles to determine the optimum dose of botulinum toxin to soften lines. This can only be done with a visual and physical examination face to face and...
  10. ARK At Home Age Aware Skincare – what are the benefits?

Article by Ceri Wheeldon. We talked to founder of ARK Age Aware Skincare, Shula Starkey, about age targetted skincare and home based business opportunities: What do women over 50 need to consider when choosing a skincare product? Once we reach 50 the function of our skin immune cells deteriorates. We need to think about repairing the skin and boosting hydration to slow down the ageing process. Choose products that do not irritate or inflame the skin and that contain antioxidants and skin-brightening ingredients. The Age Repair range has been created specifically for skin aged 50 and over. The products are aimed at boosting collagen, maximising hydration, reducing inflammation and repairing cell damage.   Can any one product be effective in combating all the signs of ageing? I don’t believe one product can combat the signs of ageing as both skincare and the ageing process are very personal to each individual....
