FADE OUT WHITE PROTECTING DAY CREAM image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon This is a question we get asked a lot. How easy is it to address darker pigmentation marks which frequently appear as we age? We have discussed the option of laser treatment in a previous article, but this can be costly and is not necessarily the route everyone wants to take. There are many relatively expensive creams on the market which claim to help, but I was keen to find a product which did the job but was also cost effective. One of our readers contacted me to say that she had been trying a new day cream, which she was convinced had made a difference in just 10 days. Pat has noticed dark pigmention patches appearing on her face – particularly on the area around her upper lip (which she was particularly self conscious about), which she believes is probably hormonal, as she experienced the...
  2. Who is prescribing your botox? New guidelines in place as remote prescribing is banned.

    botox injections image
Article by Doctor Michel Lauzel Remote prescribing of Botox no longer permitted under new GMC guidelines. Anti- wrinkle injections (botulinum toxins) such as botox, vistabel, azzalure, xeomin, dysport, have become so commonplace, that it is easy to forget that all these products are in fact prescription drugs. Every time you have a botox treatment there should be a corresponding prescription issued by a registered medical doctor, dentist or prescribing nurse. It has become common practice for freelance nurses (non prescribing) to administer these injections to individuals by obtaining botox and other botulinum toxins via remote prescription i.e. having doctors prescribe the botox via phone or fax without actually seeing the patient. With remote prescribing, the doctor cannot effectively evaluate the movement of facial muscles to determine the optimum dose of botulinum toxin to soften lines. This can only be done with a visual and physical examination face to face and...
  3. ARK At Home Age Aware Skincare – what are the benefits?

Article by Ceri Wheeldon. We talked to founder of ARK Age Aware Skincare, Shula Starkey, about age targetted skincare and home based business opportunities: What do women over 50 need to consider when choosing a skincare product? Once we reach 50 the function of our skin immune cells deteriorates. We need to think about repairing the skin and boosting hydration to slow down the ageing process. Choose products that do not irritate or inflame the skin and that contain antioxidants and skin-brightening ingredients. The Age Repair range has been created specifically for skin aged 50 and over. The products are aimed at boosting collagen, maximising hydration, reducing inflammation and repairing cell damage.   Can any one product be effective in combating all the signs of ageing? I don’t believe one product can combat the signs of ageing as both skincare and the ageing process are very personal to each individual....
  4. About Antioxidants and the Skin

    skin diagram image
Article by Dr Stefanie Williams ‘Antioxidants’ is one of the biggest buzzwords in skincare these days. I get countless questions about them in clinic every day. There seems to be a lot of confusion about what exactly antioxidants are and how they should be used. So I have summarized the most important facts about antioxidants here:   What is an antioxidant? Antioxidants are substances, which can neutralize free radicals. By neutralising free radicals, they prevent a harmful reaction called the oxidative chain reaction. Antioxidants in skincare therefore reduce ‘oxidative stress’ in the skin, help to prevent damage and thus reduce the risk of premature skin ageing and possibly even skin cancer.   What are free radicals & oxidative stress? Free radicals (‘reactive oxygen species’ – ROS) are highly reactive molecules, which contain at least one unpaired electron. Free radicals thus constantly seek electrons from other molecules and start a chain...
  5. Top tips. How to do your make up if you wear glasses.

    make-up with glasses image
Article by Ariane Poole It is a fact that as we get older most of us will be needing glasses for one reason or another. Glasses can be a glamorous accessory and reading glasses are almost mandatory after 50! Spend time choosing the right shape and colour. As a general rule the shape of the frame should be in contrast to your face, eg don´t choose a round frame if you´ve got a round face! Frame colour should be determined primarily by skintone. If you have warm colouring, choose khaki, gold, tortoiseshell. Cool-toned complexions should opt for grey, plum, black. Now that you have chosen the right frame it’s time to look at how your glasses affect the way you put on your make-up and the type and textures you use. Not only does the shape of the frame play a part in applying your make-up so does your prescription....

    anti- ageing skin tips image
Article by Louise Thomas-Minns Here Louise shares with us her top 10 tips for staying younger for longer. Louise’s top ten anti ageing skin tips: 1. Baz Luhrmann was right when he told us to ‘Wear sunscreen’. It’s my number one tip when it comes to combating ageing skin since UV rays account for a whopping 80% of that extrinsic ageing process. Look for a broad spectrum product that also contains the cell protector Vitamin E and wear everyday. 2. Eat your greens…and broccoli, spinach, berries, peppers, raw nuts and seeds. I’m an advocate for treating the skin from the inside as well as the outside and these are just some of natures best anti oxidants, free radical fighting foods. 3. Lift the lid on a product packed with ingredients like; Vitamin A, vitamin C, peptides, super oxide dismutase and AHA’s. I use a supercharged cosmeceutical level of ingredients for my clients since...
  7. Living for 1000 years – apparently not so unlikely!

    live to be 1000 image
Article by Dr Stefanie Williams I just watched a highly entertaining talk by the brilliant Aubrey De Grey on the possibility of significantly extending human lifespan (we are talking about hundreds of years!) and that this is actually not an unlikely concept even in people of our generation. This is of course an extremely fascinating theory and what is reassuring is that Aubrey is actually an acclaimed anti-ageing researcher and scientist at Cambridge University. What he says is basically that in the future we will be able to gradually extend our life span more and more and eventually even be able to turn back the clock, rather than simply stopping it. The key is that the gradual extension of life span is not a linear development, but is in fact exponential. So the rather slow appearing increase of human life span at the moment (of one to two years per...
  8. 8 signs of ageing skin

    ageing skin image
Article by Dr Stefanie Williams. Skin ageing is more than just lines and wrinkles Here are the 8 most common giveaways:  Lines and wrinkles: As we age, we develop ‘dynamic lines’ (i.e. lines caused by repeated movement of mimic muscles such as frown lines and crow’s feet) and ‘static lines’ (i.e. lines which develop independent of mimic movement such as the nose-to-mouth lines).  Irregular pigmentation: With age, our skin tone become less even and we may develop brown patches and ‘freckly’ sun spots. This is a clear sign of chronic sun damage (you never develop them in sun-protected skin areas such as the buttocks!).  Loss of volume: With age we loose volume in our face and one of the first areas our fat ‘padding’ goes, are our upper cheeks. So with age, our cheeks become flatter and our face looses its youthful heart shape.  Reduced skin elasticity: As we age,...
  9. Review: Inner Arm Shaping Cream by Pupa. Can a cream help banish bingo wings?

    Comment
pupa inner arm shaping cream image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Can a cream really help salvage wobbly arms? Its that time of year when we should be thinking about wearing sleeveless dresses and swimwear. But what if we feel self-conscious about our upper arms, can a product help firm our inner arms and banish the bingo wing effect? Pupa claims to be an intensive cosmetic treatment that firms and tones skin giving a sculpted arms effect. Does it work? Well,my skin certainly feels smoother after 2 weeks of daily use. Has it banished my bingo wings? Well. I think it would be impossible for any cream or treatment to do that. I do think that just having my skin feel smoother makes me feel more comfortable exposing my arms, although to be honest I’ve always been of the opinion that if people don’t like what they see they don’t have to look! It has made me...
  10. Could the humble tomato offer anti-ageing benefits for our skin?

    tomatoes
Article by Fabafterfifty. We are often told how the Mediterranean diet can offer health benefits, but now it would also appear that consuming tomatoes can help prevent sun induced skin damage as well. A good excuse to eat tomato based pasta sauces! Tomatoes could be the new weapon in the fight against sun damage to the skin, research at the Universities of Newcastle and Manchester has revealed. According to a new study eating tomato paste could help protect against sunburn and sun-induced skin ageing. In the study, researchers compared the skin of 20 people, half of whom were given five tablespoons (55g) of standard tomato paste with 10g of olive oil every day, with the other half receiving just olive oil, over a period of 12 weeks. The skin was exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light – which is found naturally in sunlight – at the beginning and end of the...
