Creating our own rules for a new generation of 50 somethings…..

Article by Ceri Wheeldon We’re a new generation of fifty somethings and we can create our own rules. We don’t need to live by the old ones! Our generation of women have lived through enormous change. We have moved away from the 50′s housewife scenario, partly through choice and partly economic necessity. When I was growing up very few of my peers mothers worked. Our fathers were the breadwinners and our mothers took care of (more…)

Why I feel so passionately about Fabafterfifty, and women over 50 being valued.

Article by Ceri Wheeldon Whenever I meet anyone or speak on the phone about Fabafterfifty, I am always told the same thing: “You seem really passionate about what you do”. They’re right, I am. I am absolutely determined that women should not be set aside just for reaching a milestone birthday. We have every right to live full lives, have careers, travel and follow our dreams at any age- being over 50 does not mean (more…)

Is it good news that that BBC admit they got it wrong with ‘older’ women?

Article by Ceri Wheeldon BBC Director General today admitted in an interview with the Daily Mail that the public were right to criticise the way it treats older women on tv. This folows on from the public outcry when Arlene Phillips was dropped from Strictly Come Dancing and Miriam O’Reilly took the BBC to court. To be fair, it is not only the BBC at fault, but other channels have not come forward with their (more…)

OAF. Old Age Fashionista. What will they think of next to call women over 50?!!

Article by Fabafterfifty We’ve had the SWOFTIE (single woman over 50),  the ‘Olderpreneur’ and now it seems we have another label for the over 50s to contend with.  The OAF! How DO they think them up? And why are they labelling anyone over 50 as old?!! According to the Daily Mail (The Rise of the OAF)  any woman over 50 showing any sense of style falls into this new category.  Old Age Fashionista. An article (more…)

Are you a ‘Fabpreneur’ or an ‘Olderpreneur’?

Article by Ceri Wheeldon I was chatting to Prime (the Prince’s Initiative for Mature Enterprise) today, and we were talking about the energy and maturity women over 50 are able to bring to setting up a business. It wasn’t long before we turned the discussion to perceptions of age, and how 50 is far from old. Why then are people setting up businesses in their fifties (or sixties) referred to as ‘olderpreneurs’ and not just (more…)

What do wing walking and knees have in common? (or should women over 50 keep their knees covered?)

Article by Ceri Wheeldon Women over 50 are riding a wave of reinvention and transformation. I’m a firm believer that the second half of life should be celebrated- with the benefit of experience and wisdom paving the way to ensure that the best is yet to come. When I was approached by the Daily Mail to add my thoughts  to an article on life after 50 and reinvention I was more than happy to participate. (more…)

With so many Oscar nominees in 2012 over 50, could the age of invisibility be over?

Article by Fabafterfifty Who said the over 50s are invisible? With so much talk of ageism in the entertainment industry, it is encouraging to see the over 50s leading the way in Oscar nominations. Performances requiring maturity are winning accolades from industry peers. The over 50s nominees include Meryl Streep and Glenn Close for Best Actress, Gary Oldman and George Clooney for Best Actor, Janet Mcteer for Best supporting actress, Kenneth Branagh, Christopher Plummer and (more…)

When was the last time you changed your hairstyle? Who over 50 has hair to inspire?

Article by Fabafterfifty When was the last time you changed your hairstyle? In a new survey 5 of the 10 celebs thought to be in a hair ‘rut’ were over 50.  New research shows that British women on average have had the same hairstyle for 6 years and 153 days, and nearly half have had the same style since they were a teenager ( I have to confess to fitting in this category!) Two thirds (more…)

Is Fifty the new Thirty?

Article by Fabafterfifty How many times do we read the headline that 50 is the new 30, or 50 is the new 40? I would love to disagree and just say that 50 is the new 50! Women over 50s are not pretending to be younger than we are- we are simply being 50 – it’s just that perceptions of 50 have not caught up with reality. We are a community of vibrant, flourishing women. (more…)

Who will join me in a campaign to be ‘fab-ber’ not flabbier in 2012?

Article by Fabafterfifty Who will join me in my campaign to be ‘fab-ber’ after 50 and not ‘flabbier’ in 2012? You know it’s time to seriously look at your lifestyle when you look more like the ‘before’ rather than the ‘after’ photos! I seem to have ended 2011 heavier than when it started. A wake up call! Where have I gone wrong? To be fair, it’s probably less about what I eat and far more to do (more…)
