  1. Dr Perricone shares his anti-ageing tips

Article by Fabafterfifty We asked Dr Perricone, author of 7 Secrets to Beauty, Health and Longevity what impact diet and exercise can have on anti-ageing Why is exercise important? “Exercise increases the immune system’s ability to prevent infection. Further, when we exercise, we perspire and many of the body’s toxins are eliminated in sweat. Simple exercise such as a brisk walk each day can make a tremendous difference in overall health and beauty” What can be done to improve metabolism? Metabolism boosters that I recommend are cold water fish and essential fatty acids. Perhaps the greatest superfood that help the body metabolize (burn) body fat are omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFA’s), which are found in cold water fish such as salmon. These essential fats, particularly the omega-3s, are extremely important in energy production within the mitochondria. Omega-3 EFAs also inhibit the production of the enzyme fatty acid synthase, which...
  2. to HRT or not HRT – treating menopause symptoms

Article by Ellen Sarver Dolgen A big decision that many women face during menopause revolves around the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). To HRT or not to HRT, that is the question. When you go through perimenopause and menopause (or PM&M for short), your body begins to produce different (usually lower) amounts of estrogen, progesterone, and/or testosterone hormones. These fluctuations often result in the symptoms that many women in PM&M (perimenopause and menopause) experience. HRT is intended to supplement or moderate these fluctuations and ultimately provide an umbrella for women caught in the PM&M (perimenopause and menopause) storm. Not all HRT options are created equal But not all hormone therapy options are created equal. An important distinction that needs to be made is whether a hormone therapy supplement is bioidentical or not. A bioidentical hormone is chemically identical to the hormone produced in your body. It may not have...
  3. Tips for a good night’s sleep when going through the menopause

    sleep in menopause
Article by Staness Jonekos How do you get a good night’s sleep when going through the Menopause? We asked Staness Jonekos , co-author of  The Menopause Makeover what she would recommend to women experiencing sleep difficulties Sleepness nights provoked by fluctuating hormones We have all had sleepless nights, but for millions of post-menopausal women it happens 61 percent of the time, affecting their quality of life and their relationships thanks to irritating night sweats provoked by fluctuating hormones. Empty nest syndrome, caring for aging parents, relationship changes, career adjustments and mid-life stress, bundled together with hormones in flux is a recipe for sleepless nights. Progesterone is our sleep-promoting hormone, so a decrease in this hormone contributes to a night of tossing and turning. Declining estrogen can make you more susceptible to stress, fueling this sleepless potion. Insomnia during menopause clearly can affect the quality of your life. Women suffering from...
  4. What should you do if you think a Loved One has Dementia?

    Comment
Article by Fabafterfifty With about 820,000 people in the UK suffering from dementia, it a worrying situation many families are having to come to terms with. What is dementia? Dementia is a term that is used to describe a collection of symptoms including memory loss, problems with reasoning and communication skills, and a reduction in a person’s abilities and skills in carrying out daily activities such as washing, dressing, cooking and caring for self. Memory loss – this can be one of the first symptoms that people notice. The observations people report include – noticing their loved ones forgetting things that have happened earlier in the day, getting confused about messages and who people are, getting lost whilst out and about, repeating themselves, and appearing not to be paying attention or following conversations. Problems with communication – Some people experience problems with expressing themselves, talking and understanding things. They get...
  5. When Menopause and Puberty Collide!

    Comment
Article by Ellen Sarver Dolgen Now, more than ever, so many households are experiencing puberty and perimenopause and menopause (I call it PM&M for short) at the same time. Why? In 1980, the average age of a first time mother was 23. In 2010 that number jumped to almost 27 (26.8).  This matches up a 14 year old child with a 41 year old mother. So what happens when you mix adolescent hormones and menopausal hormones in the same house?  Hormone combustion! When adolescent hormones and menopausal hormones come together These days, households with both teens and moms entering perimenopause and menopause (PM&M) can reach an atmosphere of playoff intensity and become a place of hate and not love.  That’s not a beneficial situation for anyone! I’ve heard so many stories that absolutely break my heart. From children going to stay with friends because neither child nor parent knew how...
  6. STIs don’t care about grey hair and wrinkles

    Comment
Article by Fabafterfifty The sexual health charity FPA has warned of rising sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates and poor sexual health in groups of men and women aged over 50. This is going unnoticed, says FPA, because despite the over 50s being sexually active and starting new sexual relationships, campaigns and services are only targeted at the young. Almost 13,000 men and women over the age of 45 were diagnosed with an STI in 2009, double the numbers in 2000. Last year more men over 45 got genital herpes than 16–19 year old men and over 5,000 men and women over 45 were diagnosed with genital warts in 2009 alone. Chlamydia diagnosis in women has also gone up 95% in nine years. And calls to the FPA helpline have shot up by 30% in just three years from older people worried about their sexual behaviour and STIs. Sexual health services...
  7. Fitting in Your Walking

walking for exercise in your 50s
Article by Joanna Hall Dedicated walking, may be hard to work in to your daily routine, so if you want to pay attention to your health while still paying attention to all the other aspects of life, you have to get creative. It helps to use walking as a way to accomplish daily activities. Add some of these ideas to your daily routine to really get into the habit: Forgot the milk? Put on your walking shoes when you have to make a small shopping trip. Obviously you can’t walk to the shops when you have a full list of items to lug home, but to pick up just a few things, use your legs instead of your car. Take a walk to your local bank branch to do your banking. Check out your neighborhood and use the same thinking for the dry cleaners, post office, barber shop, and other...
  8. Review of The Menopause Makeover by Staness Jonekos

    Comment
Article by Fabafterfifty The Menopause Makeover is described as ‘The Ultimate Guide to Taking Control of Your Health and Beauty During Menopause’  I have met or spoken to many inspirational and supportive women over the past few months, all incredibly encouraging regarding Fabafterfifty. One of these women is Staness, who herself has reinvented herself and shared her experience and programme in her new book ‘Menopause Makeover’. Now 52, Staness faced a wake-up call at the time of her wedding at the age of 47- her own story (and before and after photographs) are incredibly motivating, although to be honest I don’t think I EVER looked that good in a bikini! Blindsided by the onset of menopause At 47, fourth months before her wedding, Staness was blindsided by the onset of menopause and its attendant symptoms: hourly hot flashes and hormonal changes that made wedding planning an emotional roller coaster, weight...
  9. Thank you for Giving me my Waist back! Review of ‘Fat around the Middle’

    1
    fat around middle
Article by Fabafterfifty I was a fat baby, chubby teenager, relatively slim adult.  Over the past few years it seemed that I have been sliding back in the direction of chubbiness in mid-life. My mother even said ‘I suppose it’s good that you’re content rather than slim like you used to be’. Thanks Mum!! (I had recently remarried). In truth, I had no idea why my weight was creeping up, or why in particular it was all settling round my middle- I could only put in down to the inevitable ‘middle aged spread’ I’d heard so much about. Looking at my older female relatives they did all seem to be the same shape (my OH with his warped sense of humour calls them the ‘cubes’), and as much as I tried to resist, I had resigned myself to the same fate. I was exercising more, eating less and less but...
  10. When Hormones Change your Shape

    1
Article by Dr Ravi Jain The menopause and the associated symptoms varies enormously from woman to woman – however, most women find that the change in hormones also means a change in shape.      The waist can vanish as fatty deposits settle around the middle.  That pert derriere suddenly descends to a lower level and seems to have attracted a softer, flabbier consistency.  Trousers that used to fit perfectly around the thighs now strain the seams.Dedicated dieting doesn’t seem to be having much effect – except perhaps that the bits that haven’t attracted excess ‘flab’ have become scrawnier looking!  Is that it?  Are you destined lose your elegant silhouette and you just have to put up with it? Fortunately, the answer is ‘no way’ – there’s plenty that you can do. It takes a little effort ! Of course, diet and exercise plays a big role – and you may have...
