christyne life gets better over 60 image
Article by Christyne. The last you heard from me was earlier in the year when I was featured and pictured in a 2 page spread for the quarterly magazine Life and Living, not front page this time Twiggy had that slot. I did enjoy doing another professional shoot in London Shortly after I auditioned and got a small speaking role in a film university students were making as a mysterious shop keeper, it was great fun and done in a very professional way and a great experience. After that in April I entered a model search competition held at a local shopping centre over 260 men and women turned up to be photographed this was whittled down eventually to the final 19 who were then asked to do a live fashion show wearing clothes from the shopping centre. I was one of the 19 chosen in June to do the...
  2. Top tips. How to do your make up if you wear glasses.

    1
    make-up with glasses image
Article by Ariane Poole It is a fact that as we get older most of us will be needing glasses for one reason or another. Glasses can be a glamorous accessory and reading glasses are almost mandatory after 50! Spend time choosing the right shape and colour. As a general rule the shape of the frame should be in contrast to your face, eg don´t choose a round frame if you´ve got a round face! Frame colour should be determined primarily by skintone. If you have warm colouring, choose khaki, gold, tortoiseshell. Cool-toned complexions should opt for grey, plum, black. Now that you have chosen the right frame it’s time to look at how your glasses affect the way you put on your make-up and the type and textures you use. Not only does the shape of the frame play a part in applying your make-up so does your prescription....

    moving on from divorce image
Article by Adele Theron. Exercise: Take some time to think back on your life. How have you dealt with loss in the past? (Whether it was the loss of someone special or a beloved pet) ————————————————————————– ————————————————————————– ———————————————————————— What steps did you take that were healthy and healing? ————————————————————————– ————————————————————————– ————————————————————————– What steps did you take, or not take, that hampered your recovery? ————————————————————————– ————————————————————————– ————————————————————————– Healing doesn’t simply happen over time. Healing is an active process, and processing all the feelings and emotions associated with your divorce is essential to getting over it. Divorce acts like a cut and if you don’t dress the wound and work on healing it you will end up with a lot of scar tissue, which will leave a lasting imprint on your life. The real killer to healing is the complacency and resignation I have seen countless women sink into after their divorce....
  5. The Important Role of Grandparents

    3
    why grandparents are important image
Article By Diane Priestley I remember the glory days of our kids’ early childhood: the Christmas that Nana and Pa presented two-year-old Justine with a giant fluffy bear bigger than herself; the birthday they gave her the bicycle with trainer wheels; the time Pa wrapped his arms around six-year-old Daniel and taught him how to swing a golf club and how they tinkered in the shed together. Then when Justine started school and we were working late, she would stay with Nana and Pa every afternoon and Nana would make her a ‘happy plate’ and she would sit on Pa’s lap for a story or they’d giggle together at the cartoons. The reliable ritual was a refuge in her little life. There was no place safer and more fun than Nana and Pa’s cosy lounge room. Grandparents play an important role in children’s lives Grandparents play an important role in...

Lulu hair tips for women over 50 image
Article by Lulu For better or worse I seem to be known for my hair!  I have always been fascinated by hair and when I was younger wanted to be a hairdresser – I would do my mother and sister’s hair for them on a Saturday night (whether they wanted me to or not!).  I remember my mother’s comment when I married John Frieda  . . .’FINALLY you have your very own hairdresser!’  I have to admit I am a little obsessed so I thought I would tackle some of the questions I get asked all the time . . How do you get hair to look full and bouncy? Well, it starts with a great cut.  That’s essential.  My hairdresser, Kevin Moss at John Frieda, gives me a cut that creates fullness and volume – he tweaks and nips and the cut is always sensational.  Then it’s all about...
  7. Why your friends and family are sometimes the worst support during your divorce

    Comment
    divorce over 50 image
Article by Adele Theron Although your friends and family are an important part of your life, you may find that they’re ill equipped to support you through your loss. I found that even though my friends and family were well meaning, they didn’t know what to say to me and I often didn’t feel better around them. Before you chuck up this well-meaning lot, remember that although they’re trying hard, they’re just not equipped or trained to help you. Society has conditioned them to deal with loss in a particular way. It’s not their fault. They love you very much and they hate to see you suffering. They’ll try to take the pain away and will do whatever they can in the moment to achieve this. Whenever I hung out my friends they would try to distract me from the pain I was feeling or unknowingly invalidate my emotions and...

    style silhouette lady [320x200]
Article by Fabafterfifty Are you in a style and make-up rut? So many of us started to wear make-up in our teens and early twenties at a time when we wanted to look older and more sophisticated. Fast forward 20 or 30 years and there is a whole new world of make-up and skincare products to help us look our best. Now, in our 50s and beyond, when our aim is to look better and ‘fresher’ we may still be using the same techniques to apply our make-up  we learnt all those years ago. Our telephones have changed- as have the way we use them, but have we updated the way we apply our make-up in the same way? Similarly, how have we updated the way we dress to reflect the changes in our own lives (and bodyshapes)? With these factors in mind, Fabafterfifty is launching a series of workshops...

  10. Do You Want To Drink Less Alcohol?

    Comment
    Georgia Foster image
Article by Georgia Foster Many people decide to do a detox in January and often they plan to cut out alcohol to give their liver a break. They make great plans when February hits to drink less, however once back in the routine of drinking the old habits of drinking more than you plan to can creep in. But is the niggling worry in the back of your mind that you’re drinking too much getting ever-more insistent? Alternatively, perhaps you have a general concern that your tolerance to alcohol may creep up even further after the Christmas period because your tolerance to alcohol has increased, so planning to cut back or cut out alcohol for a period of time can be challenging. “There’s definitely more pressure on people to drink at Christmas time, so it is no surprise that they want to be healthier in the New Year,” says Georgia...
