Article by Ceri Wheeldon So often when getting together with friends they bemoan the lack of suitable clothes for women over 50 on the high street. One of the things I often suggest is choosing a celebrity style role model from TV and keeping an image of them in mind when shopping for clothes. Choose someone who you think looks good and who who has a similar body shape to yourself – if you choose someone like Lorraine Kelly or Ruth Langsford they will often tweet about what they have been wearing on their programmes that day and do respond to questions about where they bought specific items  - and many of the outfits they wear are from high street brands such as Zara and Hobbs and Ruth in particular seems to wear a lot of dresses (with sleeves!) from Phase Eight Many of the female celebrities on our screens have the luxury of...

dress to impress over 50 image
Article by Fi Ivin If you’re presenting in the near future, how much time have you spent on preparing your talk? You may be ready to roll but before you open your mouth your credibility is created as soon as the audience catches sight of you. It can happen before you‘ve even got to the platform. Credibility is not initially created through your words.  Your credibility starts in that area of the brain linked to the fight or flight system designed to keep you from harm – the hypothalamus. It swings into operation as soon as you meet someone for the first time – and vice versa and a whole list of impressions chunk through your subconscious as a means of protecting you from potential danger. So your first impression is vital in helping you to easily create credibility in the eyes of your public! Top tips for dressing for...

  4. Style tip over 50: Why shoulder pads could be your new best friends !

    shoulder pads image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon When it comes to looking good in clothes, it is not about being slim, but it is about looking in proportion. If, like me, you are narrow on the shoulders and broad (er) on the hips, then perhaps shoulder pads could be the answer. I’m not talking about creating Dynasty style 80s shoulders, but  using shoulder pads which are just big enough to balance out your upper body, add some definition to your shoulders and give the illusion of a smaller waist. It’s amazing how, if you are narrow or slightly round shouldered, adding the right shoulder pads can instantly make your clothes hang better. I removed a pair of shoulder pads which were velcro’ed into a favourite  dress, which were just the right proportion for me. I wear them almost daily when wearing anything with sleeves. Check out good haberdashery departments – if you cant find...

Article by Ceri Wheeldon The recent dresses with sleeves campaign was incredibly popular. And it seems it didn’t go unnoticed by some of the retailers of the dresses I featured. One of my favourite dresses was by Ceme London- and it seems quite a number of Fabafterfifty readers agreed, as Ceme noticed many of you clicking through to buy from them. As a result they have contacted me to offer FabAfterFifty readers a discount of 20% off their new collection ( with and without sleeves!). You just need to use the code FAF20 at the checkout. I have been flipping through the Ceme website and I my own wishlist is quite long- although ironically my favourite is without sleeves this time! Ceme London . 6. How to look chic over 50 on holiday

look chic over 50 on holiday image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon What do you wear on holiday to look fabulous over 50?  Apparently, on average.  women pack 28 outfits for a 7 day holiday (or so I was told when I participated in a panel discussion on BBC Berkshire yesterday)!  I have to be the first to confess to someone who does not travel light – I am very much a ‘just in case’ packer.  I have tried to select a few things to pop into the suitcase to dress effortlessly over 50 on a summer break with the French Riviera in mind.  Trousers The Riviera screams ‘chic’  and white trousers are a must , but sometimes in the heat white jeans might be too heavy an option, so here are a couple of alternatives:   These are stretch linen from Phase Eight- no side pockets or obvious lining , so they create a ‘smooth finish. I also...

QVC- Trinny & Susannah clothing range image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon When Trinny and Susannah first hit our TV screens in What Not to Wear I used to watch without fail as women were transformed – from the outside in. As participants carried their 4 bin bags of clothes up the stairs to find out what items in their wardrobe flattered and what was better suited in the bin, I used to do mental check of similar clothes  hanging in my own wardrobe- although friends would say jokingly that if ever I would appear it might take 4 furniture vans to transport the contents of my wardrobe – I’m a bit of a hoarder! So, when I heard that Trinny and Susannah were launching their own clothing line aimed at women with three main body types : top heavy, bottom heavy, or those wanting to minimise tummies, I happily popped along to take a look at the...

Rules for dressing in your 50s image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Women want to be stylish over 50 but are there any rules as to how women over 50 should dress? I’m not a stylist (and certainly don’t pretend to be), but I am frequently asked for comments for radio and press about what women over 50 should and shouldn’t wear. I always stress that there are no rules, and women over 50 are as individual as women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. We can all have our own individual style and should not feel that we need to conform to any particular way of dressing. Yes our body shape changes over 50, but we can still find clothes that fit and flatter. No rules, just tips for finding your style in your 5os Look at quality over quantity- invest in same great wardrobe staples ( trousers, coats, jacket, white shirt, great fitting jeans, classic dress,...
