  1. Style over 50: Fabulous separates for the party season

    dramatic applique skirt
Article by Ceri Wheeldon   There are times when dressing for the party season when relaxed glamour by cleverly combining separates does the trick.  I love the versatility of separates-  you can dress down a sequin skirt with a plain sweater for a pared down look and a party top with jeans for casual glamour. I’ve picked out some of my favourites. Bardot Style Top I am always a great fan of the Bardot style neckline.  This one from Baukjen  will carry you through the party season but will also look fabulous with white jeans in the summer.   Cost: £59 from Baukjen     Sequin skirt A classic with...
  2. Style over 50: 7 of my favourite Little Black Dresses

    little black dress collage
Article by Ceri Wheeldon It’s that time of year when I take out my Little Black Dresses to dress up (or down) for the party season. I’m always tempted to add another to my collection- here’s a selection available to choose from at the moment.   I love the simplicity of this dress from Gorgeous Couture – it doesn’t have sleeves but it does give coverage at the upper arms – I think this is a great timeless classic to have in the wardrobe   Cost:  £139 from GorgeousCouture.Com     This Bardot style dress has looks chic AND covers the arms, it also has ruching to help minimise tums. ...
  3. Layering with a kimono – day and evening looks

    marisota kimono collage small
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Although I seem to be known through Fab after Fifty for my dresses with sleeves, as most of my friends will tell you they hardly ever see me wear dresses – I mostly wear jeans ( of various colours)  and trousers and am a huge fan of layering. When I was asked by Marisota if I would take part in a style project for  fashion week  as part of Marisota Shapeology Fashion Week and create some looks around one of the key trends –  I just had to choose layering ….and I chose the most dramatic of the items on the list to layer with – a monochrome kimono. Why play it safe? !! The only difference for me was rather than style a mannequin (as...

    ceri and mark heyes image
Interview by Ceri Wheeldon   Mark Heyes is a regular on our TV screens and has made over more than 3000 makeovers – he loves helping women to look and feel confident at every age! I had the chance to meet up with Mark when he was showcasing his newest Ava collection for Marisota – this is what he had to say… Where did your passion for style come from? When I was 19 I started a Saturday job at Kookai in Glasgow- I loved helping women choose the clothes they looked best in. Soon customers were coming into the shop asking for ‘the young guy’ and next I...
  5. 10 Tips to Dress Yourself Slimmer Over 50

Illusion dress to look slimmer image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon We may get a little thicker around the middle once we reach our 50s, but with a few simple tricks we can look slimmer and fabulous in an instant! Think ‘illusion dress’ or column dressing and apply the same principle when putting together other outfits. An illusion dress tends to have a block of colour running straight down the centre, with a contrast colour to the sides, creating the illusion of a longer, slimmer body. Wear dark trousers and tops , or a dark dress with a bright colour longline flowing cardigan or jacket to create a similar slimmer ‘illusion ‘ look. Take inspiration from this Karen Millen dress from John Lewis Wear vertical stripes to draw the eye up the body and...
  6. Stylish over 50:How style a little black dress a look for cool evenings

How to style black dress for cooler evening image
Video by Ceri Wheeldon     Another way to get more wear out of those clothes we have accumulates in out wardrobes by the time we hit our 50s. Once again a way to take that sleeveless black dress to create a look for a winter dinner party – or restaurant meal when you need to add a little extra warmth.   For this simple look I’ve added a set of mesh sleeves ‘under’ and a faux fur gilet ‘over’. I love my costume jewellery – I’ve added one of my craft fair finds – a chunky leaf on a long chain. The effect of the long chain creates a strong ‘v’ , drawing the eye down and creating the illusion of a longer neck – helpful to those of us who might be developing an extra chin as we get older! The dress I’ve used in the video series is...
  7. Style the Little Black Dress with an Animal Print Blouse for a Sophisticated Daytime Look

Little black dress with animal print blouse
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Looking stylish over 50 needn’t cost a fortune if we simply make more use of the clothes we already have in our wardrobes. Here we have another look for a little black dress.   This is the same sleeveless dress (from Ceme London)  I have been using throughout the video series. This time what I’ve done is I’ve really tried to create a look I think which is pretty great for work. again I have looked at what can be worn under the dress rather than over.  I’ve taken an animal print blouse which has plain leather cuffs and a leather collar and popped it underneath. For an extra detail I’ve added a  very simple necklace, again to draw the eye down and create an illusion of a longer neck. And there we have a very simple daytime look for a little black...
  8. Daytime look for Little Black Dress – add a scarf with a difference! Video feature

    black dress suede scarf image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon   So here we are again, another in our video series about how to wear one very simple, sleeveless black dress in many different ways.   As you can see here, what I’ve done is I’ve taken that black dress (from Ceme London which is sleeveless. We’ve added some sleeves underneath, as you’ve seen in a previous video, But sometimes we don’t always want to wear our dresses dressed up for evening or special occasions. We want more versatility to get more wear out of the clothes we have and create a more casual look  for the little black dress as well.   What I’ve done here is I’ve quite simply added a scarf. As you can see by the scarf I’ve selected , scarves don’t always have to be...
  9. Fashion tips video : Think of your little black dress differently – wear trousers underneath

    LBD worn with flared trousers
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Be stylish over 50 in a budget! The Little Black Dress project is all about being creative and getting more wear out of the clothes already hanging in our wardrobes , just by being creative in the way we put our outfits together, One of the reasons I chose this particular dress was its versatility. The ruching really enables you to adjust the length, and as I have done here , turn it into a top in seconds. In creating this 70s retro look I have simply placed a polo necked body and flared trousers under the dress, ruched up the dress itself and voila! The little black dress...
  10. How to style a little black dress: wear mesh sleeves UNDER your dress (video)

    black dress with mesh sleeves
Article by Ceri Wheeldon We often look at what we wear over our little black dress – but what about what we can wear under the dress? In this video I put some mesh sleeves under the dress. There particular ones are by Gina Bacconi but there many available in various colours and designs – including lace. These are great for extending the wearability of those sleeveless shifts we all have in our wardrobe – and covering bingo wings! I hope you enjoy the video. I’m looking forward to sharing more ‘little black dress’ looks.   The black dress I have used throughout this video series is from Ceme London.  They...
