  1. Lorraine Kelly talks all things Style over 50 with Fab after Fifty

Article by Ceri Wheeldon Lorraine Kelly has become a permanent fixture on our morning TV screens – always looking stylish despite her early start to the day . I was lucky enough to meet with Lorraine to chat all things ‘style over 50. Lorraine was as lovely off screen as she comes across ‘on screen’ , very down to earth and happy to fetch the coffees. So , here are Lorraine’s thoughts on life and style over 50. Have you always been interested in fashion and clothes? Not at all. In my early career I was a reporter on location. I dressed more for comfort and to stay warm and dry. Nobody was concerned about what I wore! When did things change? When I turned 50. I took part in a trek but contracted a virus. As...
  2. How do you define style? Look at Advanced Style for Inspiration

Article by Ceri Wheeldon Does wearing a hat make you stylish? Is the shoes, the earrings – or just a strong sense of self? Advanced Style by Ari Seth Cohen is a wonderful book – full of photographs of stylish women – advanced in both years and style as he captured them on camera as they walked through the streets of New York. A I looked through the wonderful images in the book, it struck me just how many of the stylish women featured wore hats or headpieces. They all look stylish – incredibly ‘pulled together’. The hats add to both their style and their stature. It did make me wonder why so many of us (myself included) tend to wear hats only for special occasions, when a simple hat really can transform an outfit – not...
  3. Rod Stewart – A lesson in Style Identity?

    Rod Stewart
Article by Judith Brady I recently had the great pleasure of going to a Rod Stewart outdoor charity concert and whether you like his music or not, you have to admire anyone who is still performing live when they are fast approaching 70 – his moves may be a bit more restrained but he sounds as good as ever!   I‘ve always loved his music having grown up with ‘Maggie May’, ‘Tonight’s the Night’, ‘Do Ya think I’m Sexy’ and ‘Sailing’ and I’ve always been intrigued by his personal style. He says in his biography that his appearance and clothes have always been very important to him and he was never afraid to look different. In fact, he refers to how he was written off by many in the music business because his look...
  4. What to wear when your bodyshape changes midlife.

What to wear when your midlife bodyshape
Article by Ceri Wheeldon For many of us getting that little bit older also results in a changing bodyshape. Even if we still fit into the same dress size, for some reason clothes don’t seem to flatter in the same way, as sleeves, dart placement and waistlines are all designed to suit a more youthful bodyshape. So what are the options? Well here are just a few ideas to combat those post menopausal trouble spots! Focus on highlighting the parts of you like, and drawing attention away from the parts you are less happy with. Rounder Tums: Strategically placed ruching can work wonders to disguise a rounder tummy – especially if placed diagonally. Dress illustrated from Baukjen ...
  5. What were you wearing in the summer of 1976?

    summer of 76 style
Article by Judith Brady and Ceri Wheeldon   Finally some sunny weather – isn’t it wonderful and if you believe some forecasters, we’re in for a long hot summer. Talk of hot summers in the UK inevitably leads to reminisces about the summer of ’76 – the longest, hottest summer for hundreds of years. Do you remember? ‘Don’t go breaking my heart’ (by Elton John and Kiki Dee was No 1 for 6 weeks), ‘Heaven must be missing an angel’ by Tavares (one of my Judith’s favourites at the time because her boyfriend bought it for her) and in August, ‘Dancing Queen’ was released, one of the most popular songs ever (the video of Abba singing this on Youtube has had over 48 million views!) were all in the charts...
  6. Dresses with sleeves dresses 25, 26, 27 – creating a slimmer silhouette

Article by Ceri Wheeldon I know . I have been remiss in not posting dresses with sleeves often enough! To make up for it I am posting 3 together, so here we go with Dresses 25, 26 and 27 of the 2014 dresses with sleeves challenge. I posted a panel dress early in the 2014 channel – I know that many of you were disappointed as it sold out very quickly following my post. Here are a couple more – one even has a secret panel to help create an even slimmer silhouette. This monochrome panelled dress (2) is incredibly flattering and looks fresh for the summer. The elbow length sleeves are great for summer ‘with sleeves’ dressing. A fabulous addition to the wardrobe as it lends itself to formal (with...
  7. What to wear under sleeveless dresses

    Creating sleeves
Article by Ceri Wheeldon I know that I am always trying to feature dresses with sleeves, but today I am taking a slight departure – what about if we want to get more wear from our existing wardrobe including sleeveless dresses yet still keep our arms covered – without wearing shrugs or cardigans. I also find that sleeveless dresses with the option to layer (either under or over) are really versatile for weekends away when you want to travel light but are a little unsure of the weather! We all think about what we can wear OVER our sleeveless dresses when in fact we often forget we can wear things UNDER as well. Here are a couple of the options that I like to get more out of the clothes I already own...
  8. Dress 24 – nautical but nice

    nautical dress with short sleeves

nautical dress with short sleevesDress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon

Dress 24 of the 2014 Dresses with Sleeves  Challenge. Sleeves don’t have to be long to offer some cover. In summer we don’t always want to wear long sleeves – but a short or cap sleeve can look a little more polished than a shift dress.

I really like this crisp looking navy and white jersey dress from Apanage. It looks wonderfully chic for a weekend city break – slip on a navy blazer and it’s great for work.

The scoop neck is flattering – the white waistband has a pull through rope belt and eyelet trim.

I think this a fabulous take on the nautical look.

    A winner!

  9. Day 23 – Dress to create an hourglass effect

    Comment
Dress to create an houglass figure
Dress chosen by Ceri Wheeldon For day 23 of the 2014 challenge  this dress with sleeves from Phase Eight is far from boring!  In fact it has a bit of everything thrown into the mix yet somehow still works! The Illusion panel of the skirt helps to create the illusion of a slimmer silhouette, and the ruching helps disguise tums and create a slimmer waistline. The Bodice effect top further enhance the hourglass effect – and the lace sleeves cover any wobbly arms. What more could you ask for? This dress slims, enhances and adds a bit of drama to be stylish over 50.   The Cara Dress is £110 at House of Fraser   ...
