Information from ACAS Flexible working requests are likely to increase next year when Government legislation will extend the right to request flexible working. Find out how current flexible working legislation applies to you and how things will change next year. What is flexible working? It isn’t too long since flexible working was a rare exception to the 9-5, five day working week. But many British businesses have now realised that far from being just another “perk”, offering a flexible approach to work can help them to keep talented staff who, like many of us, have other commitments outside of the workplace. Flexible working arrangements vary from working compressed or reduced hours, flexi time and working part time to job sharing or home working. TUC research published last year shows that around 1 in 5 workers aged over 55 already works regularly from home, making this the most likely age group...

    surviving an affair image
Article by Cat Williams Can relationships survive an affair? Relationships expert Cat Williams explores…. The real reason why affairs happen. Before we choose to have an affair, whatever the circumstances, we are experiencing a period of low self-esteem. We usually know that an affair is probably not a good idea but we don’t know how to fix or improve our current relationship, so if an opportunity to have an affair is presented, we may take it to feel better about ourselves. Being wanted by someone else, especially secretly, gives a great boost to our self-esteem. What happens next? Once the affair is disclosed or discovered, it usually has an impact on the self-esteem of both partners. The person who had the affair usually feels even worse about himself or herself than ever, and the partner who was cheated on usually feels betrayed and not good enough to be faithful to....
  5. Could school exchange trips become a thing of the past?

school exchange a thing of past image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon I read with dismay about the potential end of school exchange trips - apparently due to the fear of the exchange students being abused while staying at the homes of host families. It appears there is no evidence of any abuse, and language teachers have voiced concerns about the impact on exchange experiences if students now have to stay in hostels, as language skills best improve when students are totally immersed in the culture of the ‘foreign’ family. I was fortunate to participate in a school exchange programme at the age of 14, when my school in Wales was twinned with a school in Toulouse. I had no idea quite how that experience might influence my life later! We hosted the French students first. Letters were exchanged between families ahead of time. For 3 weeks Sylvie stayed with my family, attending school with me during the...

    life starts at 50 image
Article by Dr Lynda Shaw Did you have a midlife crisis, a second wind for life, or a smooth transition where you barely noticed turning 40 and then 50? For many, myself included, life starts at 50!  Although physically your body may be changing as gravity takes control, with age comes acceptance and we become more comfortable within our own skin. As priorities in life change, we realise the first person to please is ourselves, rather than trying to please everyone around us. If you are happy with yourself, then you are likely to have more positive relationships with those around you. Recent studies have showed those aged 50 + tend to be less stressed than those in their 20’s and 30’s. Are you a baby boomer who visits the gym, has sessions with personal trainers and attends yoga classes?  Do you use Facebook and have smart phones, tablets and...

    arbitrage with richard gere image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon When I received an invite to the film premiere of Arbitrage with Richard Gere, how could I possibly say no?!  I had in fact already seen the film (at a press review), but the opportunity to see it again , with Richard Gere himself in attendance and experience the red carpet treatment would be fun. The Arbitrage film: A grown up film with a strong storyline, covering grown up issues and a good twist at the end. Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon take the lead roles as a long term married couple , living  what appears to be a gilded life – Richard Gere as a billionaire banker, and Susan as his wife who spends his millions on good causes. Surrounded by the warmth of a happy family, the film starts with Robert Miller (played by Richard Gere) celebrating his 60th birthday , talking about understanding what’s important...

Tips from Ariane Poole Wow what an Award season, Glamour and Gorgeousness everywhere! From the Golden Globes to the BAFTA’S ending with the Oscars, celebrities were strutting the Redcarpet looking stunning. For the most part dresses were Metallic, Black or shades of Nude with the occasional pop of colour. What was interesting this year was an over all recurring theme of bare shoulders, understated make-up with definition on the eyes and hair either up in a relaxed chignon or down with a soft wave/curl. Some of my favourites were: Helen Mirren, Sally Field, Shirley Bassey, Jane Fonda, Kate Capshaw, Meryl Streep and the list goes on….. To get your body & complexion Special Occasion Ready do the following: 1)     For super soft skin exfoliate your body with a mix Coconut Oil and sugar.
