I guess my mum was unusual. Between 50 and 55 she went from being an abused housewife to being Head Housekeeper at Government House in Sydney, personally serving assorted heads of state, including the Queen, and having private audiences with many of them. A truly incredible turn around. I KNOW women our age can do anything! So I'm launching a new business, publishing books, and experiencing re-nesting syndrom with the arrival of my 17 year old stepson - all in one month!

Ouch! Olderpreneur... what a dreadful term.... I quite like the suggestions above and also maturepreneur. I have started my own business in my 50's alongside a part time salary'd job after being made redundant. About to be made redundant again (short term contracts in local gov and third sector) so at least have my own business to fall back on if all else fails! Its a far cry from what I'm used to ( I set up an eco cleaning business trageting families with children who want to reduce allergies etc) there's life in the old girl yet and I feel that us women in their 50's have so much to offer. What I'd really ilke to do is help the younger generation that are currently NEET (not in employment, education or training) to set up their own business like I have as what I have done cost very little and yet produces an income and helps the planet too!
I've never heard of PRIME so will google it now :)

Gill, I couldn't agree more. So often women forget the skills they have acquired that can add value to an organisation or business, or a voluntary organisation. Important to focus and understand your strengths in business.

This is really useful advice - concise information for anyone with a yen to go volunteering. And the 'respect the culture' advice is essential for everyone, even if going on holiday.

Sallie, it was great to be able to ask the questions on behalf many women who may be thinking of volunteering. At least they now know where to go to get the answers. I'd love to hear back from anyone who is inspired to volinteer for a project.

Thanks so much for this - firstly for getting Kate to do an interview - normally she refuses! But most important for highlighting the opportunities for women over 50 to volunteer - for us women of a certain age have important skills and experience and we would encourage them to consider volunteer travel - but it needs to be right for them and the communities - so please don't hold back - ask questions do your research - make sure you get the best match possible!

As for one falling straight into this bracket it never ceases to amaze me how people talk about this with surprise. We are now a generation that have worked maybe not the whole of our working lives as some mothers took time out to raise children and then perhaps returned to work. Others have worked continuously and have seen amazing changes in the workplace. However what we have in shed loads is experience. This experience, be it of the work environment, travel, family and children experience, all provide such rich pickings to run a business from. The business maybe one bought off the shelf eg. franchise or network marketing or an idea someone has had at the back of their mind for along time. It is the experience that we have that is the mainstay of this particular age range which gives us such a good grounding in business. Practical business skills of accountancy, employing people HR are all skills that can be bought in. Managing people, time management, organising skills juggling "stuff" is what in my experience many, many women can bring to the table and do with such ease. I am having the time of my life having started in the Health Service as an Occupational Therapist. I then ran a high tech electronics firm for a number of years and now combine my skills of my two last jobs helping and coaching others to run their own businesses enabling them to develop a lifestyle of their choosing. It never ceases to amaze me how practical and competent we are given the freedom to choose.
