Hi folks
Looking for some advice. Have worked as a social worker for the past 20 years but am now reaching burnout. Have decided to retrain in a completely different career within the health and fitness industry. There is a huge amount of information out there regarding people who have trained in this field, as a second career. I suppose I am…[Read more]

Hi Rita, have you actually started your training in fitness yet? My advice would be to stay with your main job while training, and set up your new business on a part-time basis. I think your age should be an advantage given the agegroup you want to work with. I would start networking, set up a website/blog and connect to local people cia social…[Read more]

Agree with Ceris advice about keeping on working if possible while starting new business. Many entrepreneurs work 5 – 9 ( plus weekends!) and if you know the bills will still be paid it takes away
a lot of pressure. Lots of great websites for business startups too. I like Smarts, Startup Britain and Guardian Small Business Network – and this one if course!

I have written lots of articles and tips in the careers section of the site but happy to answer specific questions . The articles cover jobsearch process, preparing for interviews, making sure CV has ‘keywords’ etc.…[Read more]

I am a teacher of children and teens with severely challenging behaviour and special educational needs, I have qualifications and training up to my eyebrows, 30 yrs experience of working with kids. I lost my job after having cervical cancer and an accident after that.
I cannot get a job anywhere. Am so fed up. I have all these skills and training…[Read more]-
Hi HelenD,
One route it might be worth exploring is PRIME (the Princes’s Initiative for mature Enterprise). It runs free training programmes allocates mentors and may be able to point you in the right direction re funding. Also, look to see if you are eligible for any local or regional grants. If you check with your local authority and ask to…[Read more]-
Am on it Ceri, thank you. I filled in their application last night. Am going to get on to investigating grants now. First time I have ever been unemployed. Mention the word cancer at all on an application and you can forget it – nobody wants to know, even if you are a survivor. Not right at all, is it?

With so many of us setting up businesses in our 50s and beyond, I thought it would be helpful to have a place where we could ask questions and offer support. Mini -mentoring. Ask way !
