  2. How to be an ideal mother-in-law

    daughter in law image
Article by Cat Williams An ‘interfering mother-in-law’ is one of society’s favourite stereotypes.  The term ‘mother-in-law’ sounds negative and criticising even before anything is known about the individual themselves. Mothers and daughters-in-law often find it particularly difficult to get along.  What is the secret of those who can overcome the stereotype, and build a friendship with their ‘DIL’? “fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.” —Shirley MacLaine The first thing we need to recognise is that we pose a uniquely powerful threat to the self-esteem of our daughter-in-law.  As an older woman we could potentially pass judgement on her as a woman, a wife, and a mother, because we might feel that we have ‘been there, done that’, and feel that we either ‘got it right’ or can advise her how to. Our daughter-in-law will be acutely aware of this.  Even if we don’t actually say anything judgemental,...
  3. Does a woman over 50 have to ask a question in the audience of Question Time in order to be on TV?

    2
    Question Time image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon I could have hugged the woman in the audience who asked that question at the end of last night’s Question Time. And how true it is . The absence of women over 50 on our screens is a topic we have raised frequently on this website. Of course, being the last, ‘lighter’ question on the show it was met and responded to with humour, but none the less I think the lady who asked the question deserves a medal for getting it debated on such a high profile programme. Is it because men run TV companies? The general consensus of the panel was that things were changing, and that it had been recognised that people wanted to see more mature presenters on TV. It was also suggested that the reason for the absence of women over 50 was that most of the TV channels are run...
  4. Discovering Your Style Identity in your 50s and beyond

    9
    style identity image
Article by Judith Brady “When you say that a woman has style, what you’re really saying is that she’s true to herself”  Nicola Maramotti, MaxMara I love this quote, it sums up what style is all about – a confident expression of who you are, a distinct way of dressing that is completely and uniquely YOU – and it’s incredibly powerful. So how do you get some of this power for yourself? When working with clients, style identity is always my starting point.  It’s no good me showing them the best styles and colours for them physically, without first finding out what’s going to really gel with their style persona. Have you ever tried something on and although it fits you well and the colour is flattering, you just don’t feel comfortable and think “it’s not me”? That’s a sign that it’s not reflecting your style identity. Women over 50...
  5. Dresses with Sleeves – Peplums CAN work over 50

    2
    jaeger peplum dress image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon None of us want to look like mutton dressed as lamb, so when it comes to updating our wardrobes we do need to pick and choose our ‘on trend’ pieces carefully. This is why I think a plain peplum dress can instantly update your look, without appearing as though you are trying too hard. This navy dress by Jaeger is simple and elegant and creates a flattering silhouette. It is also great for covering tums. A statement necklace would work well with this dress – and heels are a must. Neutral accessories for a daytime look, with bold. Jaeger peplum dress £125 available from House of Fraser. Fab after Fifty style tip: if wearing to a wedding, choose a wide brimmed hat to balance the look. An alternative dress with sleeves and a peplum is this navy dress with lace by Adrianna papell from John Lewis....
  6. When ‘Old’ isn’t the Same old Old

    10
    redefining old image
Article by Jan King We know from bitter experience that women over the age of fifty tend to become invisible. We still don’t feature much in ads, and the fashion world largely ignores us. But now a government-commissioned report shows that, at least until the year 2030, we won’t be invisible any longer. The Filkin Report ‘Are You Ready for Ageing?’, published earlier this year, shows that between 2010 and 2030, the number of people aged sixty-five and over will increase by 51% and, even more extraordinarily, the number of people aged 85 and over will increase by a staggering 101%. So for the next twenty years or so, older people will vastly outnumber younger people. We’ll be visible everywhere you look. Of course, the visibility bestowed by sheer force of numbers isn’t the sort of visibility we FabafterFifty women would have preferred. We want to be visible in our...

    ceme cobalt blue dress
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Both Kim Cattrall and Vanessa Williams looked very ‘Fab after 50’ when sporting one shoulder dresses for the red carpet this week. A bit of a cheat when it comes to me suggesting dresses with sleeves I know  – can I get way with dresses with sleeve on this one occasion? I hope so! I have found some one shoulder evening dresses that I think would work for women over 50, and have also added a sleeveless one shoulder dress for those who are happy to show off their arms. The first is by Ceme London  (featured above right) – a one shoulder dress on jersey with a side split. The ruching is great for disguising tums and the cobalt blue I have shown is particularly striking. This dress also comes in black and dark purple. At the time of writing this dress is available in their...
  8. Stereotypes do not exist when looking for love over 50

    love over 50 image
Article by Dr Lynda Shaw  Why do people look for love after 50?  Is it because they dislike being on their own?  Or perhaps they just want someone to go to dinner parties and on holiday with?   Is it because they need someone to help look after the house?  Of course the answers vary depending on whom we speak to, so to find out more I asked a few people and quickly realised that stereoptypes and ageism do not exist. For instance, one chap told me that he used to think he was in love with his wife whom he married in his twenties.   But since their divorce he had met a woman who had really shown him what love truly means.  I quizzed him further, asking if this was a love that was born out of companionship with a woman who had the same interests as him.  His next...
  9. Passion or passion?

    9
    life passions image
Article by Sharon Eden, the Passion Whisperer I bet that when you think of passion, certain associations come into your mind.  Like sex, being angry, ‘mad’, and/or going off the rails.  That’s because Passion and passion have both traditionally got bad press.  Ok… end of confusion! Passion with a big P refers to your essential life energy geyser, the creative life force in you from which everything flows… including your emotions.  Most importantly, it motivates you to be creative in your life.  Anything from baking cakes to rearing children, from writing an essay to works of art, from finding more efficient ways of doing your work to develop yourself as a fab-after-fifty-woman… and an infinite number of things in between! Passion with a small p refers to those things you love to do and will spend time, effort and, sometimes, money on.  Typically you can find yourself lost in your...
