Article by Ceri Wheeldon There is a constant feeling that most retailers are choosing to ignore women over 50 when it comes to clothes. There seems to be a lack of interest in listening to what women of our age really want to see in the high street. It seems ridiculous, given the fact that more than 11.4 million women in the UK are over 50 ( more one third of the female population and almost 40% of the female adult population ) that retailers feel we should be ignored. We should be seen and our views heard! Dresses with sleeves are one element, but what other aspects should retailers be taking into account if they want to encourage we fabulous women over 50 to part with our money ? What women over 50 say they want from clothes retailers Discussions on twitter and facebook on this very subject highlighted...

  3. Is Fifty the new Thirty?

50 is the new 30 image
Article by Fabafterfifty How many times do we read the headline that 50 is the new 30, or 50 is the new 40? I would love to disagree and just say that 50 is the new 50! Women over 50s are not pretending to be younger than we are- we are simply being 50 – it’s just that perceptions of 50 have not caught up with reality. We are a community of vibrant, flourishing women. How often do we see Helen Mirren (66) and Judi Dench (77)  (both lovely, attractive, fabulous women) held up as style icons for the over 50s?  Both are stylish , but substantially over 50. Perceptions of women of 50plus will not change unless we change the role models of the over 50s in the media. Think Lorraine Kelly, Suzanne Dando, Carol Vorderman, Nigella Lawson – all over 50 and not pretending to be 30! All...

    50 small steps
Article by Fabafterfifty I am constantly meeting vibrant women, all with a sparkle in their eyes.  And all fabulous women  over the age of 50. They all seem to have one thing in common-  they all enjoy trying something new!  A quick read through some of our’ Fabwomen’ profiles ( walking the great wall of China, setting up businesses, writing novels) will show the amazing things which can be achieved- at any age! Trying new things It can be so tempting to stay within our comfort zone – I know how easy it is to become a creature of habit- one look in my shopping trolley on my weekly food shop shows how routine my weekly menu has become!  A look through holiday snapshots over the last decade and I’m wearing practically identical outfits in each one, meals out are booked invariably in one of a very small number of...
  5. Loving Your Midlife Body

    Comment
Article by Jayne Cox It’s a tricky subject, age and our feelings about our bodies. Often our bodies become the centre for scrutiny in our search for flaws, as other areas of life seem out of control. It’s no surprise that at this time of life change, what could be the best years of our lives can become a breeding ground for fear and worry. Insecurities about body image increase with age Unfortunately it’s a fact that women over 50 struggle with how they look at many stages of life and it seems that for many, insecurities about body image increase with age. For some midlife women it’s a battle to conform to social and personal expectations to be a certain size or weight and for others it’s the visual signs of age that cause torment. Advertisements, features on TV, in glossy magazines and air brushed images apply steady pressure...
  6. Figure Flattering Style for the Festive Season

    Comment
Article by Fabafterfifty With flashes of lace and elegant tailoring – has there been a better season for fabulous women  over 50 to get the ‘festive’ look?  The influence of Madmen has ensured that we have grown up, feminine styling with both designers and the high street offering great choices for us mid-life women, with figure flattering styles and solutions to make the most of all our little mid-life figure problems. Lace is everywhere this season . The ‘little black dress’ is updated with lace sleeves (very flattering for those upper arms!). Two of the best we ‘ve found have been from Jaeger (£650) and M&S (£49.50 ) A flattering  mid length sleeve  on the M&S version also helps create the illusion of a smaller waist. Covering bingo wings! We all know that upper arms can be an area for concern in the party season, but covering up our bingo...
