Article by Ceri Wheeldon Shirley-Anne Field, Anita Harris and Anne Charleston have been familiar faces on our TV screens and are now touring together as they appear on stage in The Cemetery Club. I caught up with all three ladies to ask them about how they have embraced the second half of their lives. All three have incredibly positive, but very different outlooks regarding life after 50. They talk about how their lives have been transformed since turning 50,  from relocating half-way round the world , embracing the freedom of emptynesting and taking to the stage as an actress, three lovely, inspirational ladies share their thoughts and philosophy on life after 50. Shirley-Anne Field talks about her life after 50 How has life changed for you since turning 50? I found turning 50 quite liberating. As a mother, and breadwinner I had an overwhelming responsibility to manage my acting career while ensuring...
  2. Trinny and Susannah launch new clothing range for real women – review

QVC- Trinny & Susannah clothing range image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon When Trinny and Susannah first hit our TV screens in What Not to Wear I used to watch without fail as women were transformed – from the outside in. As participants carried their 4 bin bags of clothes up the stairs to find out what items in their wardrobe flattered and what was better suited in the bin, I used to do mental check of similar clothes  hanging in my own wardrobe- although friends would say jokingly that if ever I would appear it might take 4 furniture vans to transport the contents of my wardrobe – I’m a bit of a hoarder! So, when I heard that Trinny and Susannah were launching their own clothing line aimed at women with three main body types : top heavy, bottom heavy, or those wanting to minimise tummies, I happily popped along to take a look at the...
  3. Is Mary Beard right not to change her appearance for our TV screens?

Mary Beard meet the romans image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Mary Beard is 57, intelligent, and on our TV screens presenting and sharing her passion for all things Roman. But it seems that not everyone is happy. Why? Because Mary does not conform to the stereotypical image of the presenters we are used to seeing on screen. It seems that while some appreciate her in depth knowledge of Roman history and culture which Mary so happily shares, others, such as critic AA Gill are keener to criticise Mary’s lack of make-up and use of a personal stylist. Mary is happy to be appear on screen without artifice, being comfortable in her own skin, and according to an interview given by Mary for the Daily Mail, she is hoping more women like herself will appear alongside her on our screens. Mary makes the point that she hopes that people appreciate her not for what she looks like,...

    style silhouette lady [320x200]
Article by Fabafterfifty Are you in a style and make-up rut? So many of us started to wear make-up in our teens and early twenties at a time when we wanted to look older and more sophisticated. Fast forward 20 or 30 years and there is a whole new world of make-up and skincare products to help us look our best. Now, in our 50s and beyond, when our aim is to look better and ‘fresher’ we may still be using the same techniques to apply our make-up  we learnt all those years ago. Our telephones have changed- as have the way we use them, but have we updated the way we apply our make-up in the same way? Similarly, how have we updated the way we dress to reflect the changes in our own lives (and bodyshapes)? With these factors in mind, Fabafterfifty is launching a series of workshops...
  5. Showing the world of work that 50 is not old

    2 women standing [1600x1200]
Article by Ceri Wheeldon One in 7 women turning 50 this year may well live to be 100. So with half of our lives potentially ahead of us, and possibly 70% of our adulthood to look forward to, 50 is far too young to be considered invisible or old in society or the workplace. With the state retirement age increasing to at least 66, much of our work lives also extend ahead of us.  It is not too late on our 50s (or 6s) to continue in excel in existing careers or even start new ones! Positive role models in their 50s Great to see positive role models in the public eye with Fern Britton returning to our TV screens with her own talk show at the age of 54, and despite the discussion around  ageism when Arlene Phillips left Strictly Come Dancing- it is easy to forget that  Arlene...
  6. Challenging The Myths of Midlife

    1
Article by Lindsey Agness I turned 50 in 2008 and it came as a shock to me when I discovered that women of my age were to be seen and not heard – ready to be put out to pasture.  This realisation happened at an exhibition that I went to which focused on 50-year-old women. I booked a stand at the exhibition and I also signed up to give a talk about how to change your life at 50. I was very excited about visiting a new exhibition to learn more about this age group that I was about to enter. What I found was not what I had expected. I was astonished to find that on the exhibition promotion website were adverts, not from companies promoting vitality, self-esteem and confidence, but for cancer relief, laser treatment for eyesight,  how to sleep better without any aches and pains and the...
  7. Interview with Marcella Detroit , from Popstar to Opera Star and Life after 50

    Comment
Article by Fabafterfifty Marcella Detroit, AKA Marcy Levy describes herself  as a musician, singer and songwriter, and most importantly, an artist.     Marcella shows that our 50s are a time to take advantage of opportunities Most recently seen on our TV screens  on Popstar to Opera Star, Marcella gave an unforgettable rendition  of Mozart’s Queen of the Night from the Magic Flute- proving that she is most definitely a woman of many talents, and proving to us that our 50s are a time to take opportunities when we have the chance. Fabafterfifty was delighted to be offered the chance to chat to Marcella and find out what being in her 50s means to her, her new projects and plans for the future.    50 is just a number Marcella reluctantly registered her own 50th birthday, but in her own words saw it as ‘just a number’, and believes that age...
  8. I’m Dancing You Asking? The Strictly Final

    Comment
Article by Julie Tempest Julie Tempest trips the light fantastic with dance teacher Brenda Hague ready for the final of Strictly Come Dancing It’s amazing to think Strictly Come Dancing has been on our TV screens for just six years. Of course we had Come Dancing on and off from 1949 to 1998 but although I remember seeing it occasionally, it didn’t make me want to put on my dancing shoes. Pan’s People got me tapping my pre-adolescent toes to Top of the Pops, then there was John Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever when the audience strutted out of the cinema and over the road to the bus stop. Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing did it for a lot of people – who didn’t want to be Baby in the film’s final scene? But the film that put the Strictly into Come Dancing was Baz Luhrman’s 1992 film Strictly Ballroom. So...
  9. Pamela Stephenson and Mary Byrne- both Fab after Fifty!

    Comment
Article by Fabafterfifty  Great to see  two ‘ real’  women Pamela Stephenson ( 60)  and Mary Byrne ( 50)  both over 50  and both with curves dominating the weekends peak time viewing on Saturday evening, and showing their younger counterparts in two very different competitions that women over 50 can be sexy, talented and respected in their own right . Both are the leading the way in proving to the wider world that you don’t need to be under 30 or a size zero to be considered attractive, sexy or worthy of a place on our TV screens. How refreshing, and what a great step in the right direction ! What woman watching couldn’t have been buoyed on by Pamela’s Rumba on Strictly Come Dancing, or Mary’s rendition of ‘You Don’t have to Say you Love Me’ on the X Factor. Both have my votes on Saturday nights, and for...
