Review by Ceri Wheeldon I always like to share my beauty finds that work, I tend to try products at home rather than book regular facials at a salon. As we get older our skin’s ability to renew itself slows down. Dull looking skin can have the effect of making us look tired. So how can we achieve skin that has a healthy glow, especially over 50? Despite wearing sun screen my skin had taken a bit of a battering during a visit to Brittany, where lots of healthy long walks had also exposed me to all elements (except snow!) I needed positive action. I regularly exfoliate my skin, but do find some exfoliaters have a tendency to leave my skin feeling a little red and even dry. Enter Lulu’s Time Bomb Blast to the Past dermabrasion product to the rescue. I applied a small amount to damp skin and...

FADE OUT WHITE PROTECTING DAY CREAM image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon This is a question we get asked a lot. How easy is it to address darker pigmentation marks which frequently appear as we age? We have discussed the option of laser treatment in a previous article, but this can be costly and is not necessarily the route everyone wants to take. There are many relatively expensive creams on the market which claim to help, but I was keen to find a product which did the job but was also cost effective. One of our readers contacted me to say that she had been trying a new day cream, which she was convinced had made a difference in just 10 days. Pat has noticed dark pigmention patches appearing on her face – particularly on the area around her upper lip (which she was particularly self conscious about), which she believes is probably hormonal, as she experienced the...
  3. Style tip over 50: Why shoulder pads could be your new best friends !

    shoulder pads image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon When it comes to looking good in clothes, it is not about being slim, but it is about looking in proportion. If, like me, you are narrow on the shoulders and broad (er) on the hips, then perhaps shoulder pads could be the answer. I’m not talking about creating Dynasty style 80s shoulders, but  using shoulder pads which are just big enough to balance out your upper body, add some definition to your shoulders and give the illusion of a smaller waist. It’s amazing how, if you are narrow or slightly round shouldered, adding the right shoulder pads can instantly make your clothes hang better. I removed a pair of shoulder pads which were velcro’ed into a favourite  dress, which were just the right proportion for me. I wear them almost daily when wearing anything with sleeves. Check out good haberdashery departments – if you cant find...

    I wish I had image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon It is often said that when looking back on life people regret more of those things they did not do than the things they did- even if mistakes were made. How many of us look at past opportunities and think ‘if only’. I wish I had….. I wish I had travelled more I wish I had spent more time with my family I wish I had followed my instincts and set up that business I wish had been more adventurous I wish I had written that book I had always talked about writing It’s never too late to follow your dream The good news is that it’s never too late! Just meet some of the ‘fabwomen’ we have featured who have followed their dreams after the age of 50. They have set up businesses over 50, climbed mountains over 50, written novels over 50, gone to...
  5. What can we learn from The Town that Never Retired about being employable over 50?

Article by Ceri Wheeldon There was an excellent programme aired on BBC1 recently, hosted by Nick Hewer and Margaret Mountford of The Apprentice, The Town that Never Retired. For those who missed it, a group of pensioners , all in their 70s, went back to work, to establish how they could cope in today’s workplace, and how feasible it would be for employers to include older workers in their teams. Halfway through the programme, the pensioners were joined by jobseekers under 25, to see how the two groups compared from an employability perspective. The results were extremely interesting – especially when taking into account the fact that we will all be expected to work longer, and for those of us in our early 50s now, it is quite possible that we will be expected to continue working into our 70s. So what lessons can we learn from ‘The Town that...
  6. ARK At Home Age Aware Skincare – what are the benefits?

Article by Ceri Wheeldon. We talked to founder of ARK Age Aware Skincare, Shula Starkey, about age targetted skincare and home based business opportunities: What do women over 50 need to consider when choosing a skincare product? Once we reach 50 the function of our skin immune cells deteriorates. We need to think about repairing the skin and boosting hydration to slow down the ageing process. Choose products that do not irritate or inflame the skin and that contain antioxidants and skin-brightening ingredients. The Age Repair range has been created specifically for skin aged 50 and over. The products are aimed at boosting collagen, maximising hydration, reducing inflammation and repairing cell damage.   Can any one product be effective in combating all the signs of ageing? I don’t believe one product can combat the signs of ageing as both skincare and the ageing process are very personal to each individual....

don't cancel my newspapers yet book image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Since setting up Fabaferfifty I have had the privilege of meeting and talking to so many inspirational women. Many are nominated as ‘Fabwomen’ by friends and family.I don’t think I have been touched by anyone’s story as much as the one I am about to share with you. I was recently approached by someone who wanted to nominate their friend, Julie Rogers, who had just published a book called ‘Don’t Cancel My Newspapers Yet’. They believed that Julie epitomised what being Fab after 50 was all about. Julie has being diagnosed as having terminal cancer. In 2009 Julie was diagnosed as having breast cancer. With treatment she thought she had beaten it, but a year later it came back- spreading to her lungs. On Christmas Eve 2010 Julie was told that her cancer was aggressive and that this time it was terminal. Julie was in total...
  8. How to look chic over 50 on holiday

look chic over 50 on holiday image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon What do you wear on holiday to look fabulous over 50?  Apparently, on average.  women pack 28 outfits for a 7 day holiday (or so I was told when I participated in a panel discussion on BBC Berkshire yesterday)!  I have to be the first to confess to someone who does not travel light – I am very much a ‘just in case’ packer.  I have tried to select a few things to pop into the suitcase to dress effortlessly over 50 on a summer break with the French Riviera in mind.  Trousers The Riviera screams ‘chic’  and white trousers are a must , but sometimes in the heat white jeans might be too heavy an option, so here are a couple of alternatives:   These are stretch linen from Phase Eight- no side pockets or obvious lining , so they create a ‘smooth finish. I also...

Article by Ceri Wheeldon When Marina Florance became an empty nester, she decided to follow her dream and her passion for music. Four years later at the age of 53, she is a finalist in the OldieComposers competition, and has had one of her compositions recorded by Anthony Head , which was performed live on ITV This Morning. Marina has always written songs and enjoyed singing, performing only for friends and family over the years. But in 2007 she decided, with the support of her husband, to broaden her musical horizons and start performing for the public in small venues. Initially daunting, Marina joined the Norfolk Folk Club where she met with other singer/songwriters and got used to performing for non-family members. Marina was persuaded by a friend who she had co-written some songs with to attend an event to promote new music. Marina was reluctant to attend, feeling embarrassed...
  10. In the internet age, do we expect too much for free?

    too much for free image
Article by Ceri Wheeldon Are we expecting too much for free? Is it  a question of ‘you get what you pay for’ or ‘the best things in life are free’? Has the internet age brought about the expectation that we should no longer pay for anything? Growing up, if I wanted anything, book, camera, latest toy, I was encouraged to save up and buy it. When I bought whatever item it was appreciated. But has technology and the internet changed  expectations? I was chatting to someone about a charity project they were running. Part of their fundraising initiative included producing and selling a music CD. In order to cater to those who preferred to download their music straight to digital devices, they also made it available online as download – for which a payment should have been made. They hadn’t factored in the ‘sharing’ aspect of sites such as Spotify,...
