With the Oscars ceremony done and dusted for another year, unused acceptance speeches put away for a possible future occasion and critics debate as to whether Avatar would have been a worthier winner than the Hurt Locker, I can’t help wondering, if life were a film, which Oscar category would I be nominated in? And what would my acceptance speech include?
As women we juggle and prioritise so many different areas. Wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, employee, businesswoman, homemaker. Champions of multi-tasking, we fulfil so many different roles.
Would it be ‘best director ‘for all the organisational skills we deploy , or ‘best supporting actress’ for all those events attended with partners (especially difficult as in my case they have often not been in English!) and family members and friends we have helped from crisis to crisis. Or perhaps it would be for ‘special effects’ for all the Christmas trees decorated. I would hope we would all receive an award for having been someone’s ‘leading lady’. Hair and make-up are other categories we could perhaps get mentions (the men have it so much easier in life than us!), not to mention ‘best costume design’, either for our own wardrobes or the costumes created for school plays and performances. As I sit here looking at paint charts, I’m reminded of the best ‘set design’ category. Looking at my own fairly appalling attempts at photography I think it’s safe to say that I will never be nominated for best cinematography !
Having reached my fifties I can look back on all the years that I would probably have missed out in one category or other, and how the genre of film would have changed from one year to another, one year comedy, another a serious drama. I’m not sure personally that I have ever excelled in any one particular area, so perhaps I will just have to hope for a future ‘Lifetime Achievement ‘award .
And what about the film title? I’m not too sure at this stage, but the working title would have to be ‘Fabafterfifty’!
What would yours be? 🙂
