With flashes of lace and elegant tailoring – has there been a better season for fabulous women over 50 to get the ‘festive’ look?
The influence of Madmen has ensured that we have grown up, feminine styling with both designers and the high street offering great choices for us mid-life women, with figure flattering styles and solutions to make the most of all our little mid-life figure problems.
Lace is everywhere this season . The ‘little black dress’ is updated with lace sleeves (very flattering for those upper arms!). Two of the best we ‘ve found have been from Jaeger (£650) and M&S (£49.50 ) A flattering mid length sleeve on the M&S version also helps create the illusion of a smaller waist.
Covering bingo wings!
We all know that upper arms can be an area for concern in the party season, but covering up our bingo wings needn’t be boring.
Amanda Wakeley shows us how a faux fur shrug can look great with a glitzy sequinned number and how a coloured faux fur shrug brings out the inner hippy in all of us!

Upper arms and tummy sorted!
Another great alternative to wearing something OVER our sleeveless dresses is to wear a long sleeved lace top underneath such as this M&S top (left) with tummy control (£16) , solving upper arm and tummy problems in a fashionable discreet way and extending the wearability of shift dresses whilst bringing your look up to date and bang on trend.
Valentino (left) showed some beautiful ‘nude’ lace dresses in their catwalk show.
Again, M&S have got it absolutely right with this version (right). The three quarter length sleeve is extremely faltering and the dress is versatile- great not just for the party season, but could easily be carried forward to next spring – a sharp nipped in blazer and hat or cute bolero and you’d be all set for a wedding!
Maxi dresses can be worn all year round and can have maximum impact (and cover a multitude of sins). A ‘V’ neck is Elegant and simple, elongating the neck– especially with a statement necklace. If you want to ‘dazzle’ and ask Santa for a special treat this crystal necklace from Swarovski is very glam!
There’s always a jewel in the crown – a bright shift (£39.50) with nipped in waist looks elegant and can stand out in a sea of black dresses.
A quick lick of plumping lipstick to be mistletoe ready and for the car to party, a pewter luxurious coat over the shoulder completes all the looks for a figure flattering fab after fifty festive season!
