The Heart and Soul of Travel

heart and soul of travel image

Article by Fabafterfifty

I have always seen travelling as an opportunity either do a little sightseeing, or have a well earned rest on a beach while catching up on all my reading.

Watching the recent series ‘Monte Carlo or Bust’ has led  me to think of future travel in a slightly different way. For those who missed it,  three teams of two set off to travel the length of France, selecting in each of 3 regions objects which best represented the Head, the heart and the stomach of that region of France.
With the rich cultural tapestry of France the teams were spoilt for choice , but with one team selecting the ‘soil’ to represent the heart of the Burgundy wine region, and another home- made cheese for the ‘stomach’ the teams became highly  competitive.

I have been fortunate enough to spend a lot of time in France (married to a Frenchman), and the French are incredibly proud of their gastronomy to say the least!

What 3 things would I choose to represent France? I would find it incredibly hard to choose just 3, but  an outdoor cafe table representing a leisurely lunch would have to be high on the ‘heart’ list, a chilled glass of rose or an epoisse cheese for the ‘stomach’, and  a Chanel handbag to represent  understated style for the ’ head’.

This is not really a blog post, but more an invitation to share  those things you feel represent the head, heart and stomach of places you have lived or travelled to.
Pictures welcome if you add them ( via the forums or Fabafterfifty travel group.)

My heart belongs in Beg meil in Brittany. We spent a fabulous day of perfect weather on the beach. We still refer to good days as Beg meil days.
My stomach still remembers a wooded chardonay in Jamin Paris.
My head just wants to sit at a cafe in Paris and understand how French women put together their fashions. So chic

The heart: is my passport. (I’ve recently had to buy a new one, which grieves me, as the old one had so many wonderful stamps in it.) The head – my rucksack, with its content of essentials and nothing else. And the stomach – rice, with anything unrecognisable but wonderfully tastey!
