Pamela Stephenson admits to being grateful to shapewear for her early performances on Strictly Come Dancing – so what’s new on the high street to help mid-life women to look sleek and shapely rather than frumpy and lumpy?
Legendary lingerie brand Playtex ensures that the inevitable party-outfit dread becomes a ghost of Christmas past with its new range of Pure Control shapewear, launching just in time for the festive season.
Invisible under clothes, this new range by Playtex combines comfort with smart design that can help you look up to one dress size smaller. Offering a variety of shapewear solutions, the Pure Control range features slimming technology including Powernet lining to ensure strong support and gathering to provide shapely contours. Three-step flat zig zag stiching ensures invisilibty and the silicone waistband guarantees it stays in place.
Ideal for fashion-conscious women looking for a fabulously feminine silhouette, perfect to set off the LBD or ‘Mad Men’ inspired festive frock, the Playtex Pure Control range offers varying options of high level support for the tummy, bottom and thigh areas.
I tried their Pure Control Wastliner with a silicone waistband andthree step zig zag stitching to ensure hip and tummy areas are flattened to give a noticeably slimmer silhouette. RRP £30
For the dream package in control underwear, the High Waist Long Leg(see main image above) tackles all three-problem areas in one, combining satin-like fabric with silicone waistband and three-step zig zag stitching. RRP £35. I tried this one and it definitely gave me a more streamlined silhouette under a knitted dress. It was comfortable to wear , and unlike some shapewear I’ve tried- wasn’t a struggle to get on (or off).
At London Fashion week the M&S firm control body solutions slips were a favourite with stylists in fashion shoots- especially under evening wear. Depending on style, prices range from £25 to £29.50. I liked the multiway version(right)
I also tried some shapewear by Ardyss, sold mostly through partyplan schemes- it did a great job of holding me in, but I was concerned that if I left the house wearing it and needed to take a ‘comfort break’ as my Canadian cousins would say, I might not be able to wriggle back into it unaided! Perhaps I haven’t quite got the knack of putting them on!
‘Spanx’ always get featured in the press and get rave reviews having been featured on programmes such as ‘How to Look Good Naked’ , although in my own case, I felt I was ‘squeezed in’ like a sausage rather than ‘held in’. High Powered Spanx RRP £30
So this festive season I will be looking to Playtex and M&S to help me gain a sleek silhouette.
Now to choose the dress 🙂
