Diana would have been celebrating her 50th birthday on July 1st this week. I’m sure that as Prince William introduces Kate Middleton to the people of Canada, the day will be tinged with some sadness, as he celebrates Canada’s birthday on the same day that would have marked his mother’s own half century. In fact I can remember Diana’s own visit to Canada in the early 80s where she celebrated her birthday on Canada Day, with the crowds singing happy birthday to her ( I was living in Canada at the time).
No – one can possibly mourn her loss as much as her two sons.
Focus of media coverage of Kate Middleton
But have times changed? When Charles and Diana visited the media coverage centred around Diana, her beauty and her clothes. As William visits with Kate Middleton media coverage to date appears to centred on her wardrobe, how many changes of clothes she will make per day and the fact she will be taking her hairdresser on tour but not a dresser, and will be doing her own make up.
Diana was known as a trend setter and it seems Kate does wonders for brands- with everything she wears selling out in stores and online within minutes. In fact if any brands are in trouble perhaps they should look to Kate to help them out! If only she had worn an outfit from Jane Norman and the couple placed their wedding list at Habitat to chains might have been saved in an instant!
Reflect on why Diana’s not here to celebrate her 50th
If we reflect on the fact that Diana is in fact not here to celebrate her 50th birthday with her family, as she should be doing, let’s also remember why. If public interest in her every move had not been so high, and the paparazzi poised en masse to capture and dissect every waking moment perhaps Diana would be alive today. I’m sure Diana would have been a great role model to women approaching their 50s, but please let’s not place undue pressure on William’s wife as we did his mother- let her be human and not just a mannequin and give her some space!
