Hypnotherapy: The Key To Success
Fab After Fifty meet with Steve Miller a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, best selling author, and TV presenter of Sky’s Fat Families.

What is hypnotherapy?
In practical terms hypnotherapy is a process where the hypnotherapist helps a client to relax deeply so that their unconscious mind becomes receptive to change. The hypnotherapist will use a range of hypnotherapeutic processes to help the client achieve what it is they want to achieve.

Is hypnotherapy safe?
Absolutely and the process of hypnotherapy is very relaxing which also helps client to de-stress.

Can you get “stuck” in hypnosis?
Clients never get stuck. They feel very relaxed which means they often want the hypnotherapist to continue.

We often see stage shows where people do silly things. What do you think of that?
Yes and I find it very concerning seeing someone on stage using hypnosis for non clinical purposes. Sadly many people think that is what hypnosis is about when it isn’t. Practitioners like me use clinical hypnosis for a therapeutic reason and are professionally trained to do so.

Why did you train to become a certified hypnotherapist?
Years ago I went through a tough time in my life where I was four stone overweight and I suffered from panic attacks. I decided to try hypnotherapy and it changed my life. I lost all the excess weight and my panic attacks stopped. I was so inspired I decided to train to become a hypnotherapist myself.

Do you specialise in certain areas?
Yes, I specialise in weight loss, confidence and helping people overcome panic attacks.

What do you think of the new Virtual Gastric Band?


It can work really well for some clients and not for others. Often people think the hypno-band or the virtual gastric band is a magical cure. It isn’t. A good hypnotherapist will advise the client what hypnotherapeutic model is best for the client and work with them between 3 to 6 sessions. I use the Virtual Gastric Band with some clients but experience tells me there are better hypnotherapy models in the box to use with clients.

What has been the biggest weight loss you have helped someone achieve?
Clients have lost up to 14 stone in weight working with me. However the most frequent is 4 to 6 stone which is what most people explain they want to lose using hypnotherapy.

Do you only use hypnotherapy to help people lose weight?
Absolutely not; I combine hypnotherapy with motivational coaching, menu planning, as well as tough love where needed.

What do you do to help someone reduce anxiety and increase confidence?
There are 3 key stages. The first is to help the client relax about themselves. The second is to use direct suggestion and other analytical protocols to help change any negative beliefs and make them positive, and thirdly I strengthen the clients esteem level. Once these three things are achieved clients make huge changes, all for the better.

What makes a good hypnotherapist?
Someone that is passionate about people and helping them get a result as quickly as possible. On top of that is someone who has undergone professional training and brings years of experience.

How do you find a good hypnotherapist?
First of all do an online search. Once you have done that call 3 that stand out. Check out their qualifications and experience. If you are inspired by what they say then that’s always a good sign. Finally, never go for the cheapest. The best ones are never cheapest.

What are your plans for 2012?
I have a new book coming out in January 2012 which is called “Steve Millers Slimming Secrets”. I also have some irons in the fire for more TV and of course I will continue to run my hypnotherapy practice as I love working and supporting people.
