Say Goodbye to Glasses with Clarivu

Eye health over 50 imageGuest Article. Total vision correction procedure to keep you seeing and looking fab after 50!

Always reaching for your glasses to read the paper? And then a different set to drive or watch TV? Fed up of losing your specs several times a day?

You are not alone!  More and more people in the UK are suffering from presbyopia – the natural hardening of the eyes’ lens – which can lead to long and short sighted vision, and can make increasing reliance on glasses a necessary nuisance.

But thanks to leading eye care experts Optegra, there is a solution.  Clarivu™ Total Vision Correction is making a dramatic difference as it means you may never have to wear glasses again.

Most common eye complaints which can be treated with Clarivu:

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is age-related loss of reading vision where the lenses in the eyes naturally thicken, harden, become less flexible and cannot focus clearly on close objects and results in an increased dependence on reading glasses. Presbyopia affects almost everyone over the age of 50.

Refractive errors

Refractive errors are common abnormalities of the focusing power of the eye. These include presbyopia (outlined above) as well as:

  • Myopia is short-sightedness, where the eye has too much focusing power. Images are focused in front of the retina (the area at the back of the eye), resulting in blurred distance vision
  • Hyperopia is long-sightedness, where the eye has too little focusing power. Images focus behind the retina, blurring near vision and in severe cases may affect distance vision as well
  • Astigmatism is irregularity in the shape of the cornea, the clear structure at the front of the eye, or in the lens. Images focused on the retina are distorted, in some cases blurring vision at all distances.

Cataracts

Cataracts are caused by a clouding in the lens of the eye and develop in most people as part of the eye’s natural ageing process. In fact, most people over 65 will have some degree of cataract.

Cataracts tend to develop gradually. When the cloudy area develops, it can start to cause blurred vision, double vision and light sensitivity. If left untreated it can eventually lead to vision loss.

In the early stages of a cataract, glasses or contact lenses can help correct minor visual problems. However, there are no non-surgical cataract treatments, such as eye drops, exercise or glasses, to make the cataract disappear once it has formed. Eventually the condition may worsen to the point where vision is seriously impaired. If this happens, the most effective treatment is to surgically replace the eye’s natural lens with a new, permanent advanced IOL. The procedure will remove the cataract and can provide the benefit of being able to focus on near, intermediate and far objects, as previously provided by glasses or contact lenses.

The treatment typically takes just 20 minutes per eye and involves the permanent replacement of the eye’s natural lens with a technically advanced Intra Ocular Lens (IOL). This new lens provides the additional focusing power previously provided by spectacles or contacts.

Clarivu is a proven procedure which has been performed thousands of times and is a technically advanced and sophisticated development of cataract surgery; the world’s most frequently performed surgical procedure.

What’s more, the new lenses can never develop cataracts – something experienced by 66% of 60 year olds. If you already have a cataract, or the beginnings of one, it will be eliminated during the Clarivu procedure.

I hated wearing glasses at work

Maxine McDonnell, age 58, from Hampshire, is one of many who have benefited from Clarivu.  She says: “I hated wearing glasses in my role at work as I am Guest Relations Manager in a five star hotel.  I meet VIPs and celebrities and was spending all my time fiddling with glasses on and off my head.  I just found it so frustrating that I had to depend on glasses.  I could not even see the time as I woke up without putting them on!

“I went to Optegra with the beginnings of a cataract, and only then heard about Clarivu. While I was initially anxious about having the procedure, I am completely delighted with the results. I never, ever wear glasses now, which after all those years of being so dependent, feels like a miracle.”

Clarivu™ is ideal if you’re over 50, where laser eye surgery becomes less suitable, to correct refractive errors such as long and short-sightedness and astigmatism.  With Clarivu, the replacement lens can focus at different distances, giving clear vision for everything from close up to far away.

Performed exclusively at Optegra – where patient care is at the centre of everything –  Optegra’s NHS-trained consultant ophthalmic surgeons are highly regarded within the medical community and known as experts in their disciplines.

Optegra has five world-class hospitals across the country – Surrey, Solent, Birmingham, Yorkshire and Manchester – and continually invests in the latest technology, medical expertise and state of the art surgical equipment to provide patients with a total eye-care service.
