I attended an event last night when the topic of conversation turned to the subject of older women. You can imagine my horror when somebody said as a matter of fact “well all women become invisible as they get older, don’t they!”
I immediately had to say that I disagreed, as did a very dynamic lady in her 60s and another in her 50s.
Surely we only become invisible if we allow ourselves to be. The statement was made very much on the basis of looks, and a feeling that once the blush of youth fades and we move beyond our childbearing years then we should quietly shrink away into the background.
Firstly, I believe that inner confidence and passion for life can shine through and make a women visible at ANY age in life, and without trying to deliberately look younger there is no harm in giving nature a helping hand with a slick of eyeliner, a pop of blush, a coat of mascara and lipstick!
Why should women over 50 become invisible?
Visibility is not the preserve of the young. Whoever decided that it should be?! Certainly not women over 50. There is absolutely no need for us to think that just because we reach a milestone birthday we should conveniently disappear from view.
Visibility , for me, is about energy and attitude, and nothing to do with wrinkle free skin and a firm body. We can be visible for who we are – not for looking young!
What’s wrong with being visible for giving ‘something back’, setting ourselves challenges, writing a book, starting a business, mentoring the younger generation.
There may not be enough of us gracing our TV screens, but then that is the loss of the media companies. If they ignore us they also risk losing the revenue potential from our generation.
Those of us over 50 are visible for the thousands of things we do. I for one have no intention of slipping on the invisibility cloak just yet – I hope you join me in not just being fab after fifty, but visible over 50 too!!
