The winners of the Ageless Generation competition

I was part of a judging panel along with Linda Barker to find three women that represent the Playtex Ageless Generation where real women were invited to enter or nominate those who are truly fabulous via the Playtex Facebook page.

I joined in on the final day of judging where the final section had already been whittled down to 20. Even so, it took us about 5 hours to narrow it down to the 3 winners!
Thousands of nominations came pouring in from all across the country and Una, Shirley and Alison were selected to represent The Ageless Generation based on their insatiable energy and confidence.

The winners:

Una Calcraft’s entry caught the judges’ eye due to:

  • Her ability to remain courageous in the face of adversity – Una helped raise her niece when her sister died from addiction and now works as a volunteer for the charity ‘Crisis’, and with those who suffer from addiction
  • Since turning 50, Una’s sense of adventure and independence just keeps on growing. Last summer Una hired a car, bought a Queen CD and drove across the Australian outback. “Life is as big as you want it to be” was her text to friends and family as she bombed over the Grand Canyon’s glass bottom bridge
  • What’s more, Una has proved that life is really worth living by tapping into her passion points and learning new skills. As well as learning how to play the saxophone, Una plays in cuban band gigs and dances. This September, Una will also begin a Masters degree in Psychotherapy and Counselling at Regents University in London.

Shirley Golding’s entry caught the judges’ eye due to:

  • Her conscious decision to start saying ‘yes’ to opportunities instead of her old pattern of ‘no’ – Shirley joined a gym, got fit and enrolled in a drama course in London
  • Shirley’s ‘bold’ approach to life and confidence to take risks and do things outside of her comfort zone. Since turning 50, Shirley has taken up singing and last year sang ‘Top of the World’ by The Carpenters in ‘Saffron Walden’s Got Talent’. Furthermore, she has taken part in extreme sports including White Water Rafting, Go-Carting, Go-Ape and best of all Jet Skiing
  • Her fantastic work for charity to help others in the community – Shirley became a member of Saffron Walden Teenage Cancer Trust and to date has raised over £180,000 for the Teenage Cancer Unit at Abbenbrookes hospital Alison Henderson’s entry caught the judges’ eye due to:
  • Her sense of independence and re-invention – Alison discovered social networking and is now fulfilling all the dreams she had 35 years ago. Music has always been Alison’s passion and thanks to Facebook, her music writing was ‘discovered’ online
  • Inspiring others to learn new skills and adapt to new situations, Alison is now contributing interviews and concert & albums reviews to a rock magazine and four music websites.

Linda Barker comments, “We selected Una, Shirley and Alison to represent The Ageless Generation because they shatter the out-dated notions that older women can only look forward to a life of sensible underwear and a pair of comfy slippers. All three ladies are vivacious, positive about life and adventurous, they represent what today’s 50+ women are all about”.

Congratulations to all 3 winners – all helping to change perceptions of women over 50!
