Would you volunteer to live on Mars?
At first I wondered if it was an April Fool’s prank, but it seems that there is a plan to colonise Mars, starting in 2022, and the organisers are looking for volunteers to go as part of the Mars One project.
It would appear 100,000 people have already signed up to be considered for a programme which will send 4 people at a time on the 7 month one-way journey, where they will spend the rest of their lives. .
We often talk about having new adventures over 50, but is this one that anyone would consider?
To spend the rest of your life in a bubble, being totally self sufficient, growing your own food, living in close quarters with the same 3 people – oh – and being filmed for a reality TV programme too.
Could Lost in Space become a reality?
Sitting as a child watching Lost In Space, following the adventures of the Robinson family, it never really occurred to me that in our own lifetimes there might be a possibility of a family living on another planet.
Could you sign up for a programme knowing that you were leaving everything you knew behind to live a very uncertain future knowing there was no way of returning?
Would you want to be one of the early pioneers?
I have never been particularly adventurous- although I did at one point emigrate to Canada – only to return 7 years later as I missed family too much ( and only 2 weeks annual leave didn’t help to organise visits!) and found the cold winters too severe to cope with. I turned down the opportunity to work in Sydney because of distance, so I know that I don’t have the right mindset to even consider Mars – but would you?
It seems though that that there are enough people not put off by the prospect of the 8 year training programme or the 7 month journey to live on a hostile planet.
Could you be one of them?
