floral lace shift dress with sleeves imageArticle by Ceri Wheeldon

We have been campaigning for retailers to listen to us, and offer more clothes that appeal to women over 50 . We want to be stylish and not frumpy.  We want clothes cut to fit and flatter our midlife figures. We want to dress with confidence.

Today the spots on light  Marks and Spencer’s dresses with sleeves in their autumn range.

Have they got it right?

Although I have to say I am personally disappointed to see none of the models are in our age group!

Would love your comments in the box below!

I do like the style of the dresses and the fact that they have sleeves but the colours are very dull and although we all need a little black dress even the blue is dull. It annoys me that they use younger models or older models with fantastic figures and when we go and try the dress on it looks nothing like the photo. I have been looking online at Mother of the Bride outfits and none of the models look old enough to have a daughter getting married. It’s about time those shops got real. I love your website and all the tips.

I am 64 and I wouldn’t wear any of those. They are dull and frumpy. I find plenty of flattering, colourful clothes in shops like River island, top shop, all saints etc. I even find Next now a bit frumpy! You don’t have to dress to a certain age or shop because the number of years we have been alive is seen as older. Dress to how you feel and I feel younger and more free in what I do and wear as I get older. My peers eg Lulu, Twiggy dont dress like this! our generation were the first to break lots of moulds!M&S have got it wrong.

Not impressed. Who wants to be restricted in a bodycon dress and the monochrome dress would do nothing to flatter your waistline. The common theme here is black and the design is uninspired. These dresses have sleeves but little else.

All the dresses are lovely but as someone who is now a very funny shape..tummy is most prominent feature.. none of them would look good or make me feel good. These slim fit dresses need a particular body shape to work, which all the models clearly have. However, in my experience women over 50 are still as varied in shape and size as always were….needs more creative thinking…

Love the black lace dress its timeless like the other dresses too but at 66 and retired I would get little wear out of them. Would like to see a smart casual range that flattered the changing shape of women.
