Is It Too Late to Correct My Posture? Dr Paula Moore explores…

I am 53 and quite fit and active but with quite a hump at the top of my spine which I hate! Is it too late to correct it?”

This question is a common one. It is never too late to improve your posture but the longer you leave it, the harder it will be (to make noticeable improvement) and the longer it will take.

Author Timothy Ferriss tells us: “For all the most important things, the timing always sucks. Waiting for a good time to quit your job? The stars will never align and the traffic lights of life will never all be green at the same time … “Someday” is a disease that will take your dreams to the grave with you. If it’s important to you and you want to do it “eventually,” just do it and correct course along the way.”

My point is, don’t wait for problems before you begin to take action. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to improve your posture. Maybe some of you put off addressing your posture because you do not have any obvious signs and symptoms, aches or pains. Maybe you think starting next week is no different from starting today but I say that it is, because you cannot afford to ignore your posture for even just one more day.

The most important relationship you have, is the relationship with yourself. When you are not expressing your full health potential, your relationships suffer and you suffer. Some of the conditions that may result from poor posture include:

 

  • muscle strain
  • painful, stiff joints
  • arthritis
  • chronic fatigue
  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • nasal congestion
  • asthma
  • palpitations
  • reflux
  • constipation
  •  high blood pressure

There is enough evidence to strongly suggest that you need to begin addressing your posture today. Don’t wait for your symptoms before beginning a programme of correction.

So how do you know if you’ve left it too long to correct your posture?

This is a good question and one that is hard to answer. Once you have osteoarthritis in your spinal discs and joints, it is harder to achieve ideal posture. So how do you know if you have osteoarthritis? Here are 3 top tips:

  1. Morning stiffness (takes a while to get going)
  2. Your parents had arthritis (they lost height and rounded)
  3. Your diet and lifestyle have never been very good

 

If you suspect you have arthritis, the next step is to visit your health care provider (doctor, chiropractor etc.) that can decide whether or not to take an x-ray. Only an x-ray or MRI scan can show if you have wear to your spinal discs and joints (osteoarthritis). Sometimes seeing the evidence is enough to motivate a lifestyle transformation.

So What Can I Do?

Even if you have some mild arthritis, you can still improve your posture dramatically. Try to incorporate a few of these  simple steps:

 

    1. Learn more about your unique posture type (read my next article on Posture Types)
    2. Address your nutrition (move away from acidic foods – alcohol, caffeine, sugar, wheat, fizzy drinks – which weaken bone and consume a more alkaline diet)
    3. Always include weight-bearing exercise to strengthen bone.
    4. Learn to stand tall. (see video below)
    5. Drink more water to keep your spinal discs hydrated!

 

Good posture is a process. Be patient with your body and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember to fidget, wiggle and stir – Stay mobile and active and your body and posture will love you!

    My posture has never been great, but pilates has definitely improved it. I’m 53 and believe that I’m fitter and have better posture than I had 20 years ago! I’ve become a lot more determined to look after myself as I’ve got older.

    Join a yoga class but ensure that it’s a gentle one, you will see no end of improvement in mobility and posture.
