Are you terrified of fashion? 10 most common style problems for women over 50

Article by Judith Brady

Recent research claimed that once they hit 50 most women change their wardrobes and nearly half are terrified of wearing fashionable clothes as they think they have to start ‘dressing their age’.

style problems for women over 50

I think there’s a lot more to it than that as many of us have all sorts of worries and concerns as we get older and our bodies start to change. It is very frustrating when your body has morphed into some alien being, you haven’t a clue what suits you and all the old rules about what you could or couldn’t wear at a certain age have been torn up!

Style concerns of women over 50

These are the concerns that I hear from my clients over and over again:

  1. I’m worried I’ll look  like ‘mutton dressed as lamb’;
  2. I just don’t know what suits me anymore;
  3. I’m bored with my clothes but don’t know how to create my own style;
  4. I can’t find clothes to fit my hips, legs, tummy (insert your own word!);
  5. I feel dowdy and stuck in a rut but don’t know what to do about it;
  6. I never seem to have the right outfit for the occasion;
  7. I have loads of clothes but nothing to wear!
  8. I’m not sure how to put an outfit together;
  9. I don’t enjoy shopping anymore, it’s just frustrating;
  10.  I feel fat and don’t know how to dress to look slimmer!

Do you share any these frustrations or have you got some of your own that you’d like to add to the list? We’d love to hear what you think .

    My question – when are we too old to wear jeans? On second thoughts, it doesn’t matter – they’re comfortable and what does it matter what anyone else thinks?

      I think there is a style of jeans for everyone at every age Jo- just have to choose the ones that are right for you! 🙂

      Absolutely Jo, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks as long as you get some jeans that make you feel good -you’re never too old!

    Its funny, I didn’t really like jeans when I was younger and never felt comfortable in them, but wear them more often now (maybe because they have a slight stretch to them and there are so many different styles).

      There are so many innovations with the material used for jeans as well as the cut that they can be more comfortable and more flattering than they used to be. Whatever your age, jeans can be a versatile wardrobe staple, you just have to find the right style and colour for you.

    I am 59 luckily still fairly slim and I wear what I want and the amount of people who comment on how nice I look is amazing. Just because you are older you do not have to start wearing skirts below your knees and wearing big jumpers. I am horrified by some of these presenters who say you have to dress your age what a load of rubbish the idea is to have a classy look irrelevant of your hemline if you feel good and look good people will comment.
