Now that the children have flown the nest, it’s a wonderful time to really enjoy entertaining your nearest and dearest friends! I love dinner parties; sitting down to eat with your friends and family to catch up and hear everything that’s going on is one of my favourite things to do. But what separates a nice night with some friends from a truly memorable evening? Of course the guests and food play a BIG part in that, but if you really want to impress, setting the scene through your home décor particularly in the dining room can have a big impact on the atmosphere of the evening.
Your dining room, or wherever you host your parties, should feel warm and inviting. Going around to friends for dinner and sitting in a cold, dark and empty room doesn’t exactly leave the lasting impression a host might hope for.
Create the right ambience for a dinner party with lighting
If you don’t have a big budget to be able to create your dream space, then a more affordable, yet extremely effective place to start is the lighting. Creating the right ambience for your guests is vital, you want lots of light, but make sure it isn’t too harsh and bright. Think lamps, candles, fairy lights, as all of these things create plenty of light and a great ambience.
I find dinner parties are also a great way to show off your personality through the food you prepare through to the room in which you seat them. The décor and furniture are what really shows you, so don’t be afraid to experiment with it, we don’t all have to stick to matching furniture sets straight from a catalogue. Try visiting antique shops or car boot sales to find things that are unique. If that’s not your thing, reupholstering your chairs is another simple way to give the room a nice face lift.
A feature wall is a great talking piece
The dining room doesn’t have to be there just to look good, it can also be used to create conversation. A feature wall or feature ceiling in the dining-room is a great talking piece! Use a feature wall to show off your extensive collection of china, or books or even embarrassing family photos!
Putting up a shelf on the wall with interchangeable photo frames is a great way to be able to regularly refresh the room. Change the photos with the seasons, or depending on the event, or even the theme of your dinner party.
Whatever you choose to do with your dinner parties, and the room in which you hold them, the main thing is to make sure that they show you off and make your guests feel comfortable, relaxed and happy.
