Linda Lusardi talks about skincare, looking good and her new My Miracle product range

Interview by Ceri Wheeldon

I love talking to women over 50 who are passionate about what they do. I had the opportunity to catch up with Linda Lusardi on her latest venture – and the pressures of looking good when in the public eye.

Being in the public eye, do you think you are under more pressure than most women to look good?

Well I still get stopped in the supermarket and people feel they can comment on how I look. Most of the time the comments are about how I’m smaller than people expect me to be – they expect anyone on TV to be statuesque but I’m only 5ft 4ins! People remark that they are the same age as me – but I look younger than they expect. Even before I became a model I always like to look good- but even if I wasn’t in the public eye I think I’m the sort of person that  would still want to look my best.

What is your own approach to exercise? Has it changed since turning 50?

I didn’t have to worry about my weight until I reached 35/40. Now I think it’s everything in moderation – I have phases when I rush off to the gym- but then I go on holiday and relax and things slip a bit. I’m lucky I have a good metabolism. When I was involved in Dancing on Ice I with 4 hours of training every day I was the fittest and in the best shape I’ve ever been.

Have you continued to skate since appearing on Dancing on Ice?

I go from time to time but it’s not the same skating on a public rink with everyone whizzing round you when I had the luxury of skating with Dan at a rink with music you’ve chosen! Daniel says it would only take 10 hours of training to get back to the standard where we left off. Interestingly the routine we skated in week one was the same routine Daniel had skated with Gaynor in the final of the first series – so the standard kept going up and up!

Have you always taken good care of your skin?

I have always taken my makeup off at night – no matter how late I got in. As a teenager I had oily skin and I was quite spotty to I used a good cleanser and moisturiser.

What made you decide to launch your own skincare brand?

I used to write a beauty column for the Daily Mirror and was able to review lots of products. I used to try la Prairie, Creme de la Mer which were great but they were expensive – I thought most women would not be able to afford  £150 for them. I wondered if it was possible to create a skincare range that had the same quality skincare ingredients without it costing a fortune. Some of the major brands spend a fortune on Hollywood starts to front their brands and marketing. I spoke to Paul Wright who at that time was head of Ideal World TV and we went to the same laboratories used by La Prairie and Creme de la Mer in Switzerland .

How did you go about formulating the products for your  ‘My Miracle’ skincare range?

Nicholas the chemist was wonderful. I spent time investigating ingredients. Many of the top of the range expensive products used caviar  which we now  use in My Miracle. Edelweiss has wonderful properties for calming and supporting skin which is another key ingredient. I would try various formulations at home for a month and then say I wanted something to be more emollient and make changes. The first range was launched 10 years ago but technology in skincare moves on every 2 or 3 years. The new range has tiny molecules which are absorbed into the skin really quickly. We have the same ingredients from the same laboratories as the prestige brands and the same packaging – but we are able to deliver at a price that women can afford – we don’t have the same mark up.  Really it should be more expensive so I am pleased we can keep it at this price. The eye product tightens as well as hydrates and it always feel cold when you apply it – even though it’s not kept in the fridge – so it’s great for depuffing eyes in the morning!

I notice that you include a specific product for the neck and decollete – this is an area I know many women tend to neglect when it comes to their skincare routine, why do you think it’s important to use a specific product for this area.

We all tend to ignore this area – we might extend our moisturiser down to our necks a bit but that’s it. The skin across our decollete thins and has possibly had more exposure to the sun. Our cream really hydrates and tightens the area. It also has light reflecting particles. I use it on my arms and legs when I’m going out! It has really helped eliminate the crepeyness  on my neck. It really does help to improve the whole area – I compare notes with the presenters on Ideal World – they love it  as you can see

If you had to choose one ‘hero’ product from the range what would it be?

My hero product would have to be the eye serum. I carry it around in my handbag and apply over my foundation before going into meetings. It helps to tighten and diffuse lines. I have hardly any lines around my eyes.

What 3 tips would you offer women over 50 to look and live fabulously?

Get enough sleep – at least 8 hours a night

Drink lots of water

Keep your skin hydrated and wear a good quality cream on your face!

An extra 4th tip – I’m a great fan of Omega 7 – I was recommended them for back pain but they are great for hair, skin and joints too!

Thanks to Linda for taking the time to talk to Fab after Fifty – her enthusiasm and positive attitude is infectious!
