Indulgence – A secret of the art of wellbeing?

Article by Sharon Eden

is ingulgence good for you

You know you’re getting on when old teeth fillings start falling away. Yet, it seems like only yesterday when I had those teeth filled!

Anyhow, I took the opportunity today to replace 4 big back teeth metal fillings with white… well, off white… composite. 4 big old fillings drilled out and 4 big old new ones put in all at the same time!

The fillings

Having caught a mild bug, I wasn’t totally up to speed today. 40 minutes later, having had my mouth constantly wide open, drills echoing in my head and assorted tools, flotsam and jetsam inserted into my mouth, the ‘fillings’ project kind of finished me off.

Luckily, my car drove itself home without effort from me. What did I do then? I headed straight for something sweet and comforting to eat.

OH NO!…

There I was back in my default habit of eating foooooood to feel better. I’d come such a long way since my days of substance abuse. So, did I make the choice not to use food as a comforter? You bet your little cotton socks I didn’t!

I went straight for a home-made (not by me!) gluten, wheat. sugar and diary free almond flour muffin. Just imagine the lightest, moistest, frangipane tasting, melt-in-your-mouth muffin from heaven…

Not only did I go for it…

I luxuriated in every sensory moment, every into the softness bite, every roll of my tongue and discotheque shimmy of my taste buds. It was so absolutely deliciously paradise. In fact… I ended up having two of them!

Did I feel bad afterwards?

Women’s magazine articles, and other women, tell me how bad they feel after eating something ‘naughty.’ How bloated they feel (cut out the wheat and gluten!). How guilty they feel. How ashamed they feel for having given into one of their vices.

Not me! That’s how I used to feel before I understood…

The secret of indulgence in the art of wellbeing…

Indulgence is meant to help make you feel good! It’s…

Luxury, gratification, leniency, permissiveness, fulfilling, hedonism, pampering, pleasing, petting, satisfaction, spoiling, favouring, gratifying, treating and ……………. (Write your own words on the dotted line).

One definition for indulgence I found said it was freedom from temporal punishment for sin. Oh my… SIN! This amused me because all the above gorgeous things are everything you’ve been told not to partake of if you want to be a ‘good girl.’

To hell with being a good girl…

If it means feeling denied and not enjoying yourself. There’s no wellbeing in that!

It’s true I’ve changed my diet drastically… as you might have realised from the aforesaid muffin’s ingredients. I’ve done so to feel better physically and to have more energy. It works and I have a greater sense of wellbeing more of the time.

Sweet, sweet, sweet indulgence!

That doesn’t mean I don’t indulge myself occasionally. And, to be free to do so AND absolutely love and enjoy my indulgence is most definitely part of the art of wellbeing!

Well said. I feel we all too often show others more compassion than we show ourselves.
