My name is Patricia Ferguson and I am 50. I feel privileged to receive compliments about my improved appearance which I mostly attribute to a change in diet (i.e. what I eat, not dieting!) which is mostly raw vegan, a small amount of cooked food and 1 or 2 portions of meat or fish weekly, plus the occasional treats.
Ten years ago, at 40, I was heavier and beginning to look frumpy. I felt unattractive and “invisible” to the opposite sex. The turning point came when I had some professional photos taken in 2005. They were disappointing and unflattering. I made up my mind to do something about it. I was further motivated by the fact that most of the women in my family are fairly big in size with a tendency towards diabetes which I was determined to avoid!
I qualified as a Medical Herbalist in 2004, fulfilling a longstanding ambition. I set up my business, Greenleaves Herbal Healthcare, to provide consultations for a variety of health problems. It was around this time that I was introduced to raw food after being given a book on enzymes and their power to heal, revitalise and rejuvenate.
End of Yo-Yo dieting
Significantly, for me, this introduction to raw food was a signal to the end of yo/yo dieting and some of the unhealthy dietary habits I had at the time. I bought the equipment I needed to create a variety of raw dishes and began to experiment with various recipes and began adding raw food to my regular diet. I became quite proficient at raw food preparation and now teach others how to prepare raw foods.
Regular practices that have contributed to a vast improvement in my appearance and helped to shift extra weight, naturally and consistently are 50% raw food diet, freshly made vegetable juices, weekly one-day juice fasting and colon cleansing. Regular exercise (mainly rebounding and kettlebell training) have also had a significant impact.
I am still refining and improving my diet, as there is still plenty of scope for that, but for me the important point is to have begun the journey and to continue to see where it leads.
