Review by Ceri Wheeldon
A very busy friend has been using the Gousto recipe kit delivery service for ages and has sung its praises, so when I was asked if I would like to try out some of the recipes- with the pre-measured ingredients delivered fresh to my door, I just had to say yes!
I love to cook, but have fallen victim to my weekly menu becoming a bit repetitive, so I saw trying Gousto as a good way to cook something new, without having to buy lots of new spices- some of which I might not use again too often in the future.
With Gousto, you choose from a selection of recipes – for 2 or 4 ( the recipe options change weekly) and the ingredients arrive, complete with easy to follow recipe cards.
I chose two meals for four.
A Malay Chicken Curry, and Crispy Fish with Thai sauce.
Crispy Fish with Thai Curry Sauce
Easy to follow recipe card. Having the just the right amount of fresh ingredients delivered – with no waste (I have lost track of the number of left over spring onions I have kept in the fridge in the past only to throw out). The key ingredients were Pangasius fillets, thai green curry sauce, chestnut mushrooms, coconut cream, spring onion, fresh coriander, and accompanied by basmati rice.
Friends joined me for the evening and agreed the Thai sauce was delicious. It was great to have friends over for a casual meal without having to make a supermarket dash beforehand.
Norman Musa’s Malay Chicken Curry
This smelled delicious while cooking! It was my favourite of the 2 recipes I tried. The chicken was pre- diced, and all the spices pre-measured. I find stirring a pot at the end of the day a lovely way to relax, so it was good choice of recipe for me. Key ingredients: Chicken, garlic, coconut cream, tamarind paste, root ginger, bay leaves, curry powder, onion, coriander, star anise, and accompanied by basmati rice.
We all agreed that it was delicious, and it is a recipe I would like to try again.
I think Gousto is a great way to try new recipes, and to cook fresh food without the aggravation of shopping – or the waste. No more half jars of curry paste lurking in the fridge.
Cost wise I think it is reasonable – and much healthier than ready meals . Cost per meal depends on how many portions you order . It was delivered in an insulation blanket – and arrived well chilled.
To order 2 meals for 2, the box price works out at £22.99 (£5.75 per portion) and 2 meals for 4 £35.99 (£4.50 per portion). At the time of writing Gousto were offering on their website a 50% discount off your first order- so it is well worth trying at a far reduced price.
I will definitely be using Gousto again in the future. The food is good, with the convenience of home delivery- and no waste. A winner!
