My search for the perfect mattress

Article by Ray Hobbs

Travelling around the lovely interiors shops of Cornwall certainly revealed a fascinating array of bespoke designs that gave me lots of great ideas for my next home makeover. But there are some areas of the home that tend to require a little more consideration.

It’s the bed that can cause many headaches for homeowners as there are many shapes and sizes to choose from, and in particular it seems that mattresses are not only essential for a good night’s sleep, but they can have many important effects upon our health too.

I’m sure that I’m not the only one who’s suffered from some periods of bad sleep, so I’ve been doing some research into whether a memory foam or even a pocket sprung mattress might be best-suited for my somewhat problematic sleeping habits.

I’m a bit of a light sleeper and whilst I’ve tried a few different herbal sleep remedies, I’m keen to see whether memory foam mattresses might be a good solution. These could be pretty handy as they adapt to your body shape and should stop your other half from waking up if you’re having a particularly restless night!

However, some people have said that because memory foam mattresses are fairly dense, they can sometimes be troublesome if your bedroom is prone to being a little stuffy. So this is why pocket sprung mattresses seem like they could be a great idea as they have enough air circulating to allow you to stay cool, whilst they are packed with lots of individual springs that should help ensure a comfortable night’s sleep.

Obviously it might cost a little extra to get a pocket sprung mattress, so I’d be tempted to go for between 2000 and 4000 springs from the range of models available at Bedstar as they seems to offer a good compromise between luxury and affordability.

It’s probably worth spending a bit more because I’ve been reading how old mattresses can have detrimental effects upon health in ways that’s a lot more serious than just those circles under the eyes!

In particular it’s reading how back pain can be aggravated by old mattresses that caused alarm bells to ring in my head. And when I discovered that we’re meant to change our mattresses at least once every eight years it made me realise that I think I’ve found the underlying problem to many of my everyday aches and pains. But thankfully with the arrival of relatively cheap pocket sprung mattresses, it seems like I may have also found my solution!
