I spend so many hours in front of a screen , that when I go on holiday I really enjoy the opportunity to read a good book. No kindle for me. I like to be totally away from my screen and take great pleasure in actually turning pages . I know that kindles are more practical – and certainly help avoid the risk of excess package, but I just love to hold the book in my hand.
As I review so many self help books for the website, when I’m on holiday I just read fiction. I love a light hearted romance novel to begin with, one where you know at the end of the first chapter which characters are going to overcome prejudice and challenges and end up together. I have Holiday in the Hamptons by Sarah Morgan lined up to read on my next holiday. Once I’m in reading mode I move on to my crime thrillers. Anything by Harlen Coben – I love his books – and I swap with my father who is also a fan.
Books by women over 50
I also like to explore new authors – especially debut novels by women over 50. Recent favourites have been Time to Fly by Jane Lambert and Who’d Have Thought It by Christine Webber. Both great reads. I’m looking forward to the sequels!
Then, it’s on to my historical novels – I’m a fan of Tudor history, so books by Philippa Gregory. She really captures the period for me, and makes the characters come alive. I have been known to stay up all night to finish one of her books. There are some books I just don’t want to get to the end of – they leave me wanting more – thank goodness Philippa has written so many!
Being able to take time out to read is so much part of a holiday for me. Away from distractions, emails and phone calls.
