Review by Ceri Wheeldon
I was introduced to silk pillowcases nearly a decade ago, primarily for the benefits it brings to haircare, but it also offers significant benefits to mature skin.
A traditional pillowcase can create ‘drag’- both for hair and skin. If you sleep on your side, as you move during the night, friction is created as your face moves across the pillowcase surface, created sleep creases and over time, wrinkles. With a silk pillowcase, the smooth texture helps the skin to glide over the surface and also retain moisture and helps to reduce puffiness.
Less friction so less tangling and breakage
As we get older, our hair tends to become drier and more brittle. Again , sleeping on a traditional cotton pillowcase creates friction, tangling and contributes to hair breakage. With a silk pillowcase the hair again slides over the surface. From my own experience , I wake up looking less like the mad aunt who has been released from the attic! There is less tangling. Hair is smoother, and there is far less breakage. Especially good for those with long hair – I am one of the many who disregarded the ‘rule’ that women over 50 shouldn’t have long hair. I have every intention of wearing mine long for as long as possible!
The pillowcase I feature in my review is by ONLY CURLS . It is in fact only silk on one side (£30, onlycurls.com). It is in fact cotton on the side that faces the bed – so avoids slipping, and silk on the upper side.
I have a video review of the silk pillowcase in my June round up video – the pillowcase review starts 9 mins and 25 seconds in.
I think a silk pillowcase is such a simple way to enhance your hair and skincare routine – and takes no additional effort. Well worth trying 🙂
