  1. Job search over 50: What do you do when you are rejected for a role on the basis of ‘having too much experience’?

    Comment
Article by Ceri Wheeldon This is a common issue  50plus jobseekers encounter. How do you respond to this? What are the reasons for the potential employer’s concerns? They may assume that you will be using the role simply as a stopgap until you are able to find another position with the same level of seniority and responsibly as your previous position. They may be concerned about the dynamics of you reporting into somebody who may have less experience than you. To address these concerns you need to be able to open up the conversation in a non defensive and non confrontational way. One suggestion I make is to ask a question along the lines of ‘what experience in particular would you like me to forget?’....
  2. Autumn Style Picks to look Fabulous over 50: 6 Dresses with Sleeves

    Comment
Article by Ceri Wheeldon 2020 has been a strange and challenging year for most of us. I know in chatting to my own friends we have never felt less motivated to go and buy new clothes as both our work and social lives have changed beyond all recognition. We have been very much relying on shopping in our own wardrobes! But,  even with more restrictions predicted (just as we were starting to embrace a new sense of normality) , the occasional new item of clothing can serve to give us a lift – even if its just to relax at home or jump on a Zoom call. I have found that I have been wearing my more relaxed clothes over the...
  3. Why women over 50 are great in customer services roles

    Comment
Article by Ceri Wheeldon I have long been highlighting the value ‘older’ employees can bring to customer services roles. This was absolutely the case in a call I had with the call centre of a well known communications company today to resolve a billing issue. It took three calls to resolve an ongoing problem – the first two calls were unable to fully sort – it took a third call  to get everything sorted – and the third person in this chain of calls just happened to be a woman in her 50s! I have had ongoing issues for quite some time, with all sorts of errors including at one point having two accounts allocated for the same service with the direct debit somehow being lost between the...

You may have heard jokes about the quarantine fifteen. For many adults, spending more time at home is making them gain weight. Almost 50% of women and 25% of men said they’ve put on pounds due to COVID-19 restrictions, according to a WebMD poll. There are several reasons for this. 5. What is Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis? How is it diagnosed and how is it treated?

    Comment
Interview with Dr Stephen Holmes conducted by Ceri Wheeldon Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is a little known disease, yet is the 4th biggest respiratory killer in the UK. Around 32,000 people live with the disease and 5,300 people die each year in the UK. On average it takes between 18 and 30months for a patient to be diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis following their first visit to a health care  professional. So what is IPF , how can we recognise symptoms and what are the treatment options? This year DJ Janice Long , sister of Keith Chegwin who died of the disease in 2017, has joined forces with the charity Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis to raise awareness and help people to recognise symptoms – and ask their GPs to ‘ Listen to our...

Whether you are looking for a complete change of career direction, are looking for a new role as a result of redundancy or returning to the workplace following a career break, how you feel about your can make all the difference – if you believe it will be a barrier it will be.
