  1. Why do French women look so chic?

    1
Article by Jane Buckle Today in our Readers’ Corner Jane Buckle ponders French Style! If you go to Paris and have seen the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Louvre and all the “must see” sights may I make a suggestion? Go and find yourself a café with seats outside and watch the fashion parade. Parisien women are renowned as being the best dressed women in the world. And it is not just their clothes it’s their hair, make-up, shoes and bags. Everything is carefully matched, a trait that is seldom found in other cities. So what if they are having trouble walking in their 5” stilettos, it fashion darling with a capital F. These women usually have tiny dogs either tottering on the end of a lead or tucked into a handbag. It so unthinkable that any of these ladies would clean up their dogs...
  2. Wedding Bliss

    1
Article by Jane Buckle Jane shares her experience of the joys of weddings! I don’t know if it is the champagne that helps many a man to propose but I do know from my experience that they wake up in the morning a full blown fiancé albeit with a raging hangover. The girl in question is already on the telephone to her Mother so there is no going back. You are engaged and your bachelor life style has just flown out of the window. Most girls, well almost every girl wants to get married in the summer under the blue skies although there are quite a few who want a winter wedding, complete with lovely snow scenes. Either way your fiancé and her mother are already discussing dates and wildly looking for a church that isn’t already...
  3. When Christmas is finally over….

    Comment
Article by Jane Buckle  Mission Accomplished! Phew it is finally all over – Christmas I mean. I am slumped on the sofa watching Granny fast asleep and snoring after sipping her 10th glass of Sherry all day  saying “ Oh just a little one please Dear”. She is joined by the husband whose only contribution to the day haw been to carve the turkey. The kids are squabbling about their presents and I am exhausted. I have wrestled with the turkey since 6am. I have peeled I lb of sprouts which no-one will eat. Peeled half a ton of potatoes and parsnips. The Cranberry sauce and the crackers were somehow placed on the table by me as everyone opened their presents in the Living Room. There I found debris flying everywhere and who stuffed...
  4. Jane Buckle shares her story of her first Christmas in France

    Comment
Article by Jane Buckle When I first moved to France it was in September and I immediately got the builders in who set about renovating the house that I bought. By Christmas the entire place was covered in a thin layer of white dust just like talcum powder. My builders, Francois and Jacques fell about laughing when I complained. They helpfully suggested that I should only wear white clothes so that I wouldn’t be able to see the dust. Oh so helpful and what a daft idea. We realised that the French do not have a Christmas Day, they celebrate on Christmas Eve so my Brother, me and the dogs just resigned ourselves for a non-Christmas time. The village ( or was it a Hamlet?) I had chosen was very small and...
  5. Jane talks about True Friendship

    1
Article by Jane Buckle It is said that if you count your friends on more than one hand you are very lucky. True friends are always there when you want them, and visa versa. However there is often a “Best Friend” without whom your life would not be the same. People say that you don’t make friends after you are fifty as you get set in your ways. I don’t agree. My BF is Pamela and from the moment I met her we forged a bond that has not broken throughout birth, death, divorce, moving houses, even moving countries. But I knew she was pretty special right from the start. I was invited to a shooting party and was told that Pamela would be coming up on the same train as me and I...
