Vitamin C has been used throughout history by women looking to lighten their skin – I can remember my grandmother being adamant that pressing half a lemon on the backs of her hands would diminish her age spots. Not too sure that quite worked, but it seems vitamin C is clinically proven to have skin brightening properties, and when applied topically in the right way can improve skin tone.
The problem up until now, it seems, is that one of the best forms of vitamin C (L-asorbic acid), with its great anti-oxidant properties, is very unstable and degrades very quickly and loses its effectives when applied to the skin.
