  1. Day 6 A more formal look in the 2014 Dresses with Sleeves challenge

Article by Ceri Wheeldon A little more formal for this one and a totally different style to the previously featured dresses with sleeves. You can be formal without looking frumpy over 50. This style of dress always reminds me of Grace Kelly – it has that retro 50s feel.  The flared skirt is ideal for pear shapes. The ‘V’ neckline helps to elongate the neck. The ruching around the middle helps to camouflage any thickening around the middle. The embroidery around the hemline helps to soften the whole dress an make it slightly less formal and as a result more versatile. The cobalt of the skirt and cuffs adds a vibrancy to the dress. I would wear this dress with ultra feminine heels This Eliza J dress costs £130 and is...
  2. A splash of colour on Day 5 of the 2014 Dresses with Sleeves Challenge

Article by Ceri Wheeldon The right dress can also help minimise some of the changes we may have experienced in our figures in our 50s! This dress I have chosen for Day 5 of the challenge is ideal for creating a balanced silhouette for those with narrow shoulders, wider hips and thicker middles. The darker, denser pattern on the lower half of the body helps to create the illusion of slimmer hips – the shoulder pads add width to the upper half to balance, while the swirling pattern around the middle creates the illusion of a smaller waist . The three quarter length sleeves are flattering. Because the dress is quite busy – especially with the chiffon tie, accessories should be discreet. I would wear this with red kitten heels and a black...
  3. Dresses with Sleeves – a dress that flatters in Day 4 of the challenge

Article by Ceri Wheeldon Anyone for spots? There is absolutely no need to avoid pattern in our 50s (and beyond) .This grey spotted dress has ruching around the waist help  to draw the eye in and help disguise extra pounds around the middle. The three quarter length sleeves are incredibly flattering and the ideal length to draw the eye to the waistline and elongate the lower half of the body. The slight scoop of the neckline helps to elongate the neck and the cut of the dress allows for movement. All in all a winner. I would wear with a pair of kitten heels and understated jewellery and the spots create enough impact without adding anything that will create a look that is too ‘busy’. The Sandwich faded spot grey...
  4. Dresses with Sleeves Challenge Day 3 – Ideal for spring

Article by Ceri Wheeldon A higher neckline and a lower price tag! I have had quite a few requests for dresses with sleeves that don’t show any cleavage – whether due to crepey skin or perhaps post mastectomy -and  also for some dresses that are more affordable. I have selected this Rise Pippa Knot Dress from John Lewis as I think it ticks all the boxes . The knot at the waist helps to draw in the waistline. The colour is stunning – just right as we launch into spring. It’s a great transitional dress for this time of year. At only £35 it is a bargain! One thing I would say though, is that round necklines like this can...
  5. Dresses with Sleeves – Day 2 – Style should be Fun!

Article by Ceri Wheeldon Style over 50 should be fun, and shopping for clothes should be a pleasure – not a chore, which is precisely why I have chosen this tomato red  Mary Portas Kite Dress for Day 2 of the  204 Dresses with Sleeves challenge. Dresses with sleeves don’t have to serious or formal! The fact that the dress is longer at the back than the front seems to elongate the body, and the tapering effect helps to skim any extra inches around the middle to create a sleek silhouette. The mesh sleeves make it a bit quirky. I love the fact that it has a V neck – great to wear that fabulous statement necklace. There is no way would be...
  6. The 2014 Spring Summer Dresses with Sleeves Challenge Day One

Article by Ceri Wheeldon I previously ran a ‘Dresses with Sleeves’ challenge where I featured a dress a day for 50 days. I keep being asked when I’ll do it again – so here I am. Day 1 on the 2014 Spring/Summer Dresses with Sleeves to look stylish over 50 challenge! Last time I was far too tempted by the dresses I selected – and needed to buy a bigger wardrobe as a result – I’m hoping I can be a little more restrained this year – as does my bank balance. I will try to include a variety of styles  – and prices. Do let me know which are your favourites – and please feel free to add your own styling tips to the comments! For Day One I...
  7. How to wear red and get the Helen Mirren red carpet look

Article by Ceri Wheeldon For anyone who thought women over 50 should be invisible , and shrink away into a sea of beige- think again! Helen Mirren looked stunning in red on the red carpet this week. The all over lace  red dress fitted her to perfection, with the chain belt at an angle drawing attention away from her waist  and elongates her torso- a clever trick for thickening middles! She certainly made a statement. I love the idea of accessorising with dramatic earrings – but personally Helen’s were a little on the large side for my taste and my ears! Her makeup emphasised her eyes with smokey kohl eyeliner- and the red lipstick proves that you can wear red lipstick at every age. Note how Helen’s lips have gloss...
  8. How to Choose the Best Dresses with Sleeves

Article by Ceri Wheeldon When it comes to being stylish over 50 there is a dress with sleeves to suit just about every occasion, every bodyshape, and every budget. The good news is that retailers seem to be finally listening to what women over 50 want to wear- and at last there is more choice on the High Street. There are some key points to consider though when choosing the right dress for you. In this first of this series of articles we look at some of the key points to consider in choosing the best dress with sleeves for you – looking at how the dress is constructed from a cut and shape perspective. The Cut of the Sleeves – some of the clothing manufacturers are still cutting their...

We want to be stylish and not frumpy.  We want clothes cut to fit and flatter our midlife figures. We want to dress with confidence. Today the spots on light  Marks and Spencer’s dresses with sleeves in their autumn range. Have they got it right?
